I am "Charlie's" grandfather. I served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam era. Charlie's maternal great uncle was Capt. John B. Smyth, USN, where he served in the Pacific during WWII. Charlie's maternal grandfather was Capt. Hiram P. Salter, Jr, who was a doctor during WWII, and also served in the Pacific. Charlie's mother was a proud Marine, serving 6 years, during peace time. Charlie is proud to be in training for the U.S. Navy.

So very proud of him!!! Per above, I do not know what PIR means, but, being his grandpa, I checked that box.

As a grandparentof a sailor currently or soon to be at Great Lakes you'll have many questions about what Charles is going through. In the Navy Bootcamp group is a discussion called A MUST READ for all New Navy Parents. Read through this post as it will do a lot to give you some understanding about what your sailor is learning and why. And be sure to check out the videos available in the Bootcamp Group as well and as PIR nears be sure to spend time in the PIR group for hints and helps!

PIR stands for Pass In Review. It refers to the graduation from boot camp. An event I hope you can attend. If you look above near the top of this site, you will see some tabs. Boot Camp and PIR groups are two of them you will want to look at.
Welcome aboard to NavyDads.com John! When my son first enlisted, I was a little scared and worried for him. Not coming from a military family at all, I had no idea what to expect. What I found out was that he had made the most mature decision of his life! I found lots of answers to my questions right here on NavyDads.com.
My son Stephen was an AWO2 in the P-3 community. However, after 6 years of service, he was medically discharged in July of 2014. We are proud of our son and his service to our country.
