My wife wants to bring my son's car up for him since he is going to A school in Great Lakes. I am just wondering what would have to happen to do this.
Is is going to be a royal pain?

If they have a car they will not be issued base pass decal when in most A Schools. If they don't have a decal they would have to store there car off base. You need to verify with your SR regarding the there specific situation.
My daughter was not allowed to be in a civilian's car at first when she arrived in Monterey. She was gradually provided privileges, such as wearing civilian clothes in the evenings or off base, and was eventually allowed to have a car. We did not ship it to her though, it cost more than it's worth. :)
Greetings,
Have your tried the Ask a Sailor group to pose your question? I believe from what my son went through that EG is correct. While the sailors are in school they are required to earn privileges by completing training assignments and military requirements. For example there are certain orientation classes, watch standing signatures, satisfactory grades, and inspections to name some examples. He will not be able have a car on graduation day. He has no where to park it at Recruit Training Command. Once he gets on Mainside and through all the orientation he may be able to have his car. He should receive a student hand book that tells him what can and can not have in each phase.
My son had to wait till the Tuesday after boot camp graduation to move across the road to Mainside. We could not have left a car with him in any case. When he did move over for ATT training he was not even allowed civilian clothes till he had advance from phase 3 to phase 2.
He will not be allowed to have his car after boot camp. They are unable to bring their vehicle on base until they reach a certain phase. He will be finished with his schooling and on to the fleet before he earns the right to have a car. So don't worry about the car situation. Once he is stationed to a fleet, then he will be able to bring his car.
