Got an Email from our son today. He joined his ship over the weekend and is working in the line shack. Thanks to all of you I was able to 'splain it to Mama.
I've heard different stories from different people, I think your right you get out of it what you want, are there times when I would have rather been doing other things? Absolutely, but there is something cool about standing out in front of a 50 million dollar fighter jet and knowing you are responsible for making sure everything is ok for launch, that you have the power to say nope its not going.

Initially I thought that would stink not gettting straight into your shop and getting to work in the area you are trained for, but now I'm thinking it sounds like a cool way to experience the flight deck and get acustomed to being on the ship. Is it generally a decent assignment or do guys dislike it? Or is it like everything else...you get out of it what you put into it?
Every squadron has a line division, it refers to the line of aircraft parked out in front of the hanger, the line shack is where all the line personel hang out and work out of, their job is getting the planes ready for daily flights, there is usually a plane captain who is in charge of his particular plane and a 2nd mech. who is his helper and 2nd set of eyes when they are starting up and launching aircraft both at home and on ship, most new people coming into a squadron do some time in the line division until their shop is ready for them, it gives the new sailor some insight into flight ops and familiarizes them with their particular aircraft.
Our son leaves for BC 18082014, with AV rating. I'm just bumming around trying to get educated....

It's more than 30 years since I worked the line, I was a non designated E3 waiting for my A-school to open up, back then you could go to a squadron first and work on the line, or in the coffee mess, or 1st lieutenants cleaning spaces and heads, so I chose line because if nothing else it kept me around the planes, as a plane captain you got to know the workings of most of the systems the plane had including the electrical, that's why I chose AE because you had to know virtually every part of the plane and why or how it worked, plus flight opps. on board ship is probably the most scary, intimidating, and awsome thing you'll get to do. Tell your son as soon as they get in some new people he should get moved into his shop, and have him ask his LPO if when the line is slow if it would be ok to work in the AE shop. most commands like that extra effort and the electric shop can always use more bodies.
Ralph that depends on the command. My son worked the line shack, but my daughter did not.
