At Great Lakes, the laptop problem is still "time" - they're in school, still marching, still standing watches and having other duties - and, unless they have an "air card" for a specific Internet Service Provider, there is no easy access Internet available. Our daughter ended up mostly texting home with her cell when she had a chance, and watched movie DVDs on her laptop instead of using it for Internet.
Oh, and the cell phones: a word of caution. They are instructed it is okay to have their cells in their pockets while in school, but they better be off. Someone in a class with our daughter had forgotten to turn his off (not even "vibrate" but OFF) and it rang during class. The instructor had everyone with a phone put it on the desks, and those whose phones were not OFF had them confiscated until the weekend. That meant not even being able to use them in the berthing area for several days.
There are rules for reasons, and they need to learn to follow exactly what the instructors say.
My daughter graduated 8/12 and she stayed at GL. She was able to take her phone and laptop back with her after liberty the first night. Bring them along with you and have them ready in the hotel. After PIR, your SR will need to go back to RTC so they can move over to other side. They will get a brief before they are released for liberty. In that brief they will be told when they need to be back and what they can bring with them.
