SHIP 03 DIV 320 PIR 09/23

#1) It appaears (from another site) that many members of 03/320 were allowed to call home Saturday-08/13.  Howeever, we did not receive a call from our SR.  Is it normal for some to be allowed call and others not?  My wife and I are obviously upset, hoping there is nothing wrong, hoping we didn't miss the call.  Any information would be appreciated.

#2) Anybody else with a SR in 03 / 320?

  • Yes, very.  It depends on what they're doing, when some folks may have duty and when phones are available.  They don't have 80 phones available for a whole group to use at the same time.  LOL!  The calls can also be limited to whether or not, as a unit, the whole group is doing what they should be doing.  There is a bit of peer pressure exerted for things like passing or not passing inspections on their bunks, etc.  A couple people who don't get it can ruin things for everyone else.

I wouldn't worry.  Sometimes you'll get a call, other times not.  Our Sailor, who has already deployed once on her destroyer, was participating in the Northern Edge exercise off Alaska this year and couldn't call home on Father's Day, because the 6,000-plus Navy, Army, Marines and Air Force troops participating had no telephone communications allow.  It comes with the territory, just as not knowing where they are when they're deployed.  There is a lot of OPSEC - operational security - involved, and you learn not to ask.  If they can say, they will.  LOL!

  • Richard, my son is in 10 / 265 with a PIR date of this coming Friday. We received his first call the night he got there and his second call last night. I was just as nervous about the lack of calls and when I asked him why he hadn't called he said that he tried once and since he didn't get us on the phone, he then called his girlfriend instead. And then on other days where the Division got phone calls sometimes he had other things that he needed to study for or he needed that time to complete other tasks. He apologized because he didn't realize that we assumed something had gone wrong when he didn't call. Hang in there! The call will come eventually probably from an 847 area code. Make sure that you have your phones on hand.
