Nervous kid

Well, we had quite the scare the other day. Daughter had gone to spend sometime with her mother and her family. She got the "are you SURE you want to go in the Navy. We can help you pay for school..." talk. She went to her next DEP meeting questioning her decision to enlist. After about 24 hours of sheer panic on my part we were able to remind her why she enlisted in the first place. The support from my wife, me, and the recruiters, made a huge difference in getting her motivated again. For your soon to be sailor remember that they are still just young kids who are scared and nervous. Constantly remind them about how proud you are of them for their decision to serve their country. Let them know everything they will get out of the Navy. Keep them focused and motivated. We are truly blessed with a recruiter who is a fleet sailor. His concern is to help his recruits improve their lives. 71 days until she ships!!!!! E

  • Know how you feel, Seems like my son had to jump through one hoop after another, but some of his own doing- like getting tattoo makeovers to cover questionable ones and such. He is now leaving in about 3 weeks. Then he has a grand father who was a Marine fighter Pilot- so my son is being told aviation or aviation support rates are only thing worthwhile.

My son is going in as Seaman apprentice and leaning towards gunner mate or Quartermaster. Thankfully he has a Chief recruiter, who came up the same route. Its been 33 years since I went through Army Basic training and served as a Infantryman, and tell him its a "grunt" job and looked down by much of other Army occupations - but would do the same thing over again.

  • I can well imagine your fear when she questioned her decision.  My son, Will has not gone through that yet, but I am always worried something will happen to effect his enlistment.  I am glad you have a good recruiter and others to support you.  Be strong!
