My son got his orders last Monday. He will be going to Bahrain. I looked on all the websites regarding the base. They did not indicate that there any rugby teams on base. Does anyone know if there are any local clubs that Sailors join up with?
I started this group in the same hope you raise now. Unfortunately my son got to rub elbows with Rugby along the way, but never actually had the opportunity to play. I believe the Navy enlisted team trains at one of the bases in Florida, but as you suggest, we learned that many bases - and even some ships - have their own sides. If and how soon depends on his rate and his chain of command is the bottom line.

My son is currently at RTC. His PIR date is 9/11 and then off to San Antonio for A school. How long do sailors have to wait before they can begin to play on base teams or even try out for the Navy team? He was a Lock on his club team for the pawed two years and I know at some point he wants to pick it up again.
Welcome Ed. My son played HS Rugby in Oregon; played on the state All Star Under 17s one year. Once he got into the Navy, which he loves, his first love has been relegated to occasional scrums with an all-services team on his base. He finds he is not encouraged to actively pursue Rugby at this point and hopes to be able to return to it at a future assignment.
My son is still in boot, but played HS rugby for 3yrs and recently received his Level 1 ref certification. Of course right now he has a lot on his plate, still has to go to A school, and then find out where he's going, but figured I'd get any info here that he may need once he settles in. I also still help with the local HS rugby teams, and am the "official" league photographer.
Roy , Thanks for the information and will pass it on to my son. I am a certified Rugby coach and just trying to steer him in the right direction as he has a lot of talent . He will be in Norfork,Va next May
Cora and Patrick, welcome to the Rugby group on Navy Dads. Of course this season is over, but new ones are ahead. I understand the All Navy Rugby side has held its camps at NAS Jacksonville; there is some information on the web page for that station.

"Sailors who are interested in participating in the Navy Sports Program or serving as coaches are encouraged to first contact their base athletic director to obtain a Navy Sports application and fill out the application completely. Sailors will not be selected without the approval of their commanding officer. The completed application should be faxed to the Navy Sports Office at 901-874-6831. Applications may also be mailed to:
Navy Sports Office, PERS-651E, 5720 Integrity Drive, Building 457, Millington, TN, 38054-6510."
Truth is, my son has learned, there is Rugby to be had at almost any assignment. Being permitted to participate hinges more on the sailor's availability and other obligations. He will be playing with a side in Maryland next season and is anxiously awaiting a good scrum.
My son will be looking for a team once he returns from his deployment May/2012 and wanted to know which team provides best opportunities for Navy Rugby players and who could provide guidance on All Navy selection process.
