  • BTW- the rumor (from pretty reliable sources) is that PIR ceremonies are postponed for the next year.....

  • Effective immediately, the U.S. Navy is suspending all Recruit Training Command (RTC), in Great Lakes, IL, and Officer Training Command (OTC), in Newport RI, formal, large-scale graduation ceremonies until further notice as part of its proactive approach to protect our mission and limit the potential spread of COVID 19.

Recruits, Officer Candidates and students will continue to graduate, but the transition from Recruit or Officer Candidate to Sailor will be marked by small, internal events which cannot be live-streamed.

  • You're welcome, Edward.    Couldn't agree with you more!!   It has been several years now, however it was a day full of pride and happiness.    Safe travels to all. ~ Pat

  • Hope the PIR experience was everything we told you it would be!  Enjoy the time together !

  • Congratulations, Edward, and to the Sailor, too!!!    Trusting your family will enjoy some time this weekend.    Best wishes to all.    ~ Pat Doherty

  • Barring technical issues we also provide that video live on the main page of this site.......just an option

  • Will be attending Jan 5th 2018. Son is 909. Can't wait!
  • If you are attending this Thursday's recruit graduation ceremony, you must pick up your tickets in advance at the Recruit Family Welcome Center at Burkey Mall, 2630 Green Bay Road, North Chicago, IL 60088.

Due to federal holiday on Friday, ticket pickup hours have been adjusted for the Thursday graduation: 1-6 p.m. Tuesday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday; and 5:30 a.m.-8 a.m. Thursday. If you are picking up your tickets on Thursday, please allow yourself ample time to pick up tickets and arrive to the ceremony prior to 8:45 a.m.

Each guest must pick up their ticket individually and they must have an ID; parents may pick up their minor children's' tickets under the age of 18 with their proper form of identification. There are no tickets available for extra guests or guests whose names are not on the access list.

*PLEASE NOTE* If you are returning to RTC later in the day to pick up your recruit, everyone in the vehicle must still have a ticket in order to drive onto the base or else you will be instructed to turn around.

  • From RTC:

    Friends and Family of RTC,

Recently RTC changed security protocols in order to ensure the safety and security of our Sailors, recruits, and visitors. In doing so we have implemented a new security form for use in screening all guests who will be attending the ceremony.

To help eliminate any questions about filling out the form and where to return the form, we first encourage everyone to visit our website and review the graduation page or look for answers on our FAQ pages. It is important to remember that these forms MUST be filled out and returned to your recruit in the time indicated on the form and on our website. Again, these forms need to be returned to YOUR RECRUIT. Do not return these forms to Public Affairs, Events, Security, Admin, or any other department at RTC.

The mailing address for your recruit will be delivered to you by your recruit in the initial correspondence you receive from them after they arrive at RTC.

Please remember, it is the recruit’s responsibility to send this initial correspondence to whomever they choose and it is the recruit’s responsibility to keep their families informed on their progress as well as choosing who they want to attend their graduation ceremony. Again, please send your security form to your recruit.

    Thank you,

    RTC Public Affairs

PIR Restroom Access

I'll be attending PIR for my son sometime near the end of March 2019. I'm a type 2 diabetic - I sometimes have issues with needing to frequent the restroom frequently... I imagine I'll have trouble going 2 hours without having to go. To anyone who has been to a PIR at GL before - do they lock you in the room for 2 hours straight? Any advice?

Tips for new PIR rules as of Oct 6, 2017

You will notice on this site that there are still a few pointers to the old rules.  As of Oct 6, 2017 you do NOT need to download a parking pass from the RTC website any longer.  Your ticket to the event that you hopefully obtained the day before graduation at the Recruit Family Welcome Center will get you through the gate the day of graduation.  If you were unable to obtain your ticket the day before, the Welcome center is open at 0530 the day of graduation. On the PIR date, you can enter…

PIR Proper Attire

Outfit for the PIR  The going consensus is that the attire is business casual, though there is currently no enforced dress code, so jeans and a tee are welcomed. But really? Your new Sailor will be in his/her *formal* Navy attire, please dress accordingly!  Your new sailor will be in their dress whites or dress blues. Think of how you will like to look standing next to them in the many photos that will be taken.  Also, wear sensible shoes. You will be doing a bit of walking. The drill hall…

Driving, Not Walking On, for PIR

I have read many forums but still do not have clarity on one pending question.  I am driving (NOT walking on) to RTC for the PIR on January 6th.  Since I am driving, do I need to first go to the Visitor's Center to check my ID and to get my hand stamped, or can I go directly to Gate 8, have my/our ID checked while in my vehicle, park and proceed to the Ceremonial Hall? Given the extremely cold weather in Great Lakes, I am attempting to minimize outside walking for my wife, my civilian son and…
