  • Here's how those percentages are categorized...

    AFQT Categories

The military divides AFQT scores into the following categories. The lower your   category number, the more attractive candidate you are to the military for enlistment:

    • Category I - 93-99
    • Category II - 65-92
    • Category IIIA - 50-64
    • Category IIIB - 31-49
    • Category IVA - 21-30
    • Category IVB - 16-20
    • Category IVC - 10-15
    • Category V - 0-9

The AFQT score is a percentile score. What does that mean? In 1997,   a study, known as the "Profile of American Youth," was conducted by   the Department of Defense in cooperation with the Department of Labor. DOD administered   the ASVAB to around 12,000 individuals, ranging in age from 16 to 23. Your AFQT   score is a comparison of how well you scored on the four subtests, compared   to those who took the ASVAB as part of the 1997 survey. In other words, if you   have an AFQT score of 70, that means you scored as well or better than 70 percent   of those 12,000 folks.

  • As I am learning --there is a conversion table. The percentile given relates to what they call the AFQT- or Armed Forces Qualification Test- which is integral to the overall ASVAB. Here is a link (if permitted) that converts the percentile scores to raw scores and vice versa, as well as a detailed explanation of the Category system and what it all means...

  • Thanks Jack. If there's another format the recruiters are going by we need that info so we can update this page. I might stop by my local recruiting office to see if I can get this info. But it's awesome to hear his options are across the board. From what I've seen on this website, the Nuke program is a very hard school to get complete. It's the version of becoming a SEAL but mentally instead of physically. I believe the drop out rate is very high. If they cannot get through Nuke school they are forced to choose another rate.

  • Thanks for that info... I know my son was not given his raw scores in this format. Instead his score was reported as a percentile, which placed him in a Category. In his case he scored well enough to be placed in Category 1, and the Recruiter told him that it meant he qualified for any job in the Navy including Nuke School (though the idea of more math and physics make him shudder).

His next task is to get scheduled for the physical examination and testing to see if he is fit enough to move forward. Then, as I understand it, he meets with a Classification Specialist who helps him select a Rating and get a contract together.

I'll see if I cans dig up some kind of a score conversion table that translates the raw scores to a percentile for these various categories.
