  • I spoke too soon! One more short chapter to add to his story. Your mileage may vary.

My son gave up his AIRR contract and elected to pursue SO which meant resubmitting scores (using combat sidestroke only for the swim) to the SO draft. His Recruiter said that if he didn't get the new contract by his original ship date he would have to go per the AIRR contract.

The good new is that he got picked up almost immediately, but then they also moved his ship date up from the 30th to the 4th with less than a week of notice. We scrambled and pulled a going "aweigh" party together and he shipped out on schedule, despite not having signed the actual SO contract until arriving at MEPS that morning. In fact, he ended up not leaving until the next morning, but they put him up in a local hotel overnight. The last we heard from him, he was hoping on the GL bus yesterday afternoon.

Hooyah for going with the flow.
  • Thanks for letting me "blog" here, essentially.  At this point I'll leave the saga with a happy ending...

My son was awarded an AIRR contract yesterday and his ship date is Oct 30, 2012.  Go Navy!

  • Jack, definitely help us document your experience so that others may learn that follow you in this process. A general timeline, need to knows, do's & don'ts, etc can be a huge help to this group.

  • I'll be happy to contribute here and share some of our experience with the Recruitment/Career Planning process leading up to Enlistment and ultimately heading off to Boot Camp at Great Lakes.

For a Navy novice (like me) these early days can be fear and anxiety laden, simply because it's such unfamiliar terrritory.  For many of us, the information search doesn't begin until Junior, or Lil Miss comes up one day and says-- "Hey Dad (and/or Mom)--- I'm seriously thinking about joining the Navy."

    Deep breaths!.... "Okay.... now what?"

Or even more shocking I'm sure, when they come home and say-- "I just joined the Navy!"  --before Mom and Dad even had a chance to figure out what that means exactly.

Thanks E.G. --for starting this new group.  I think it will be a great jumping off point for the true newbies to the Navy Program who are just beginning to try to understand the process, and help their kids develop a plan while avoiding potential problems, pitfalls and mistakes that could have serious consequences before their careers really begin in earnest.

Please share your stories and perspectives as I share mine, and if you see what seems like misinformation here-- please correct the record and share what you know!

PST-- Physical Standards Test

PST.... I'll tell you a secret... Another top secret installation? Nope. This PST is the Navy Physical Standards Test, and depending on what job you son or daughter is interested in pursuing, this is a test they may have to pass before they are offered the opportunity to attend training, even before Boot Camp, and before they are ever offered a contract with the Navy. If your son wants to become part of the SEAL Team, or if your son or daughter want to become a Rescue Swimmer or Navy Diver,…

Newbie School-- What is MEPS???

Must be some kind of Top Secret military installation, like Area 51, where they take our kids..... Never to be heard from again! I hope not. The Military Entrance Processing Station is the place he went to write the ASVAB and today he went back there at 0-dark-30, for the Physical Examination. My understanding is that sometimes this can all be accomplished with one trip, but for my son it was on two different days. In each case he had to report to the Recruiter's office, and the Recruiter had…

Visiting the Recruitment Office

After my son expressed an interest in the Navy, we planned a trip to the local Recruitment Office.  We called first and set up a time to visit the following day.  We sat and chatted for a few minutes asking general questions about a possible career, and about life in general as a member of the US Navy.  --Then the Recruiter started asking my son a series of questions to gauge his interest and seriousness as a candidate.   He asked about his academic record, sports activities, achievements, and…
