  • Btw, #1 is in his 3rd yr of college now, courtesy of the US Navy!!
  • Our son went to boot camp 3 weeks ago. This is our 2nd son who has served in the Navy. Last one was back in 2011-15. First son was a communications electrician on the USS Nimitz CVN 68. We were and are very proud of them!! Hope #2 enjoys his time like his big brother did! Hope to be more involved here this go around!! Thanks Navy Dads
  • My oldest daughter will be stationed in Japan in January. My youngest daughter left for Great Lakes yesterday. Very proud!
  • One more thing to be careful of are apps and electronics that use geotracking/geotagging.....some good guides at http://www.slideshare.net/NavalOPSEC/presentations

  • Bill, You should also consider putting What'sApp on his phone. He can then call and/or text over wifi from anywhere in the world where he can attach to wifi. My wife uses it for communicating with co-workers in India. It works great. A friend's son was coaching baseball in Israel last year and he told me it sounded like he was just talking across town on the phone rather than across the world.

  • Garrett Roy. Just before my son went to basic, I purchased a new IPhone for him. We are hoping that with that and his laptop, when he gets to his deployment destination, there will be a wifi hookup and we can use either email or Skype. All we know at this time is where his specific location will be. No other details given out as yet.
  • Bill,

Almost forgot, with all of the communications methods you need to keep OPSEC in mind.  See the link near the bottom of this page on the right side.

  • Bill,

On the electronics side, if your son has an Android device and access to Wifi we have found the LINE app to work pretty well, especially for the price (free). If he has an Apple device then there is Facetime.  If he is going to be stationed on a ship then he will have limited access in any case. My son is coming back from his 2nd deployment in a few months and we have tried several of these methods.  They all work some of the time, but none of them are 100%.

Don't forget to get his APO address.  He will love any cards and letters as much as any voice conversation because he can hold on to it and re-visit it as often as he likes.  Care packages are great and you send them to the APO you only pay the domestic shipping, however there are restrictions on what you can send.  There is actually good info on this at the USPS web site.

  • My son is almost finished with A school at G.L. He will have another ten day course learning the basics of fire suppression aboard a ship at sea. From there he goes to Japan on his first deployment. Sure would like to hear from some other parents of sailors about the best way to communicate with their sailors overseas. Several people have suggested a Skype account. Any info would be appreciated.
  • My son graduated BC April 29th. He is in A school at GL Now. His grandad, his grand parents and I don't know how many more of my family is buried in a little Cemetary outside of Knox City, Tex. I would have given anything in the world if my dad, Bill Harper, SR. Could have seen my son's PIR. He would have been so proud, just as I was. Anyone else from Knox County have a sailor currently serving?

Sub vs Carrier

My son is still at boot camp then off to Nuke school. He is considering signing up for sub duty preferring to be "on/off 3 months" at a time vs carrier "6 months on/off". He is engaged (to a wonderful young lady that we all love) and will be married by the time he graduates nuke school. Of course they want to be able to see and communicate with each other more often. Are there any resources you can suggest, that can shed light on the sub vs carrier? Specifically;1. Are there any videos that…
