  • no a school always follows boot then groton conn for a month of sub school

  • I work at the nuclear training unit in ny all the sailors who go to subs go to sub school first groton ct

  • It all depends on what rate he is assigned to.  There are seperate pipelines for nuclear and  for the operational side of the boat (weapons, navigation, culinary, machinists, radio etc.).  Nuclear does not go through Groton.  They, as other replies indicate, go through Nuke school.  If someone doesn't make it through Nuke school and he volunteered for subs, they may send him to BESS and then A school for a different rate.  My son just finished FT A school which is part of the SCEF.  With class forming, he was therefrom November to the end of August.  I know machinist mates have a shorter period and one of his friends who is in communication is staying longer because he picked up a "C" school.  If he is a Nuke, there is actually a whole website on submarine nukes run by a former submarine nuke officer with great insight into the world of submarines and nukes.  Website is called "And the stupid shall be punished".  If you type that into google, you will find it.

  • If he's in the nuclear power program, he doesn't go to sub school even though he's going on a sub.

  • It all depends on what type of sub and what his job is going to be
