BUDS class 290

These men, my son among them, are being subjected to the most intense scrutiny of the year due to the soft approach of previous classses. I say Soft even though BUDS soft is pretty brutal. Either way the ones that get through are very special and the ones that try and don't make it have nothing to be ashamed of.... Prayers for all of them, I am in awe of their commitment but not surprised that America still produces such men,,,,

  • When my GS became a member of the Smurf Crew I ended all my post with Smurfs Rule. The instructor call the guys together on the beach and while looking at his smartphone asked if anyone knew grandpa273. After GS raised hand instructor said Smurfs Rule that will be a extra long run for the Class. Some one make a few post that the instructors did like and when the person did not raise his hand to tell who it was they also got to go for a run. After 4 days of asking and 4 day on no one giving a answer they got to run each day. Finely when asked the Class told the guy to tell who it was they were tired of running. If I remember correctly the guy lasted about 3 more weeks and was in the fleet in another rate.

Personal I do not care but I would take the chance. Remember no one is in a good mood as the Helo crash and less than 75 per cent finishes the Class. Like I said I will remove it if some one in the Class objects to it.
  • if you notice the pic is of low resolution and not close enough to define any one person. i would not of posted any pic if it had. this pic was found on the web

  • Wayne, be carefull when it comes to posting pictures. While you can not acturally see the guys faces the instructors can match your name and come down hard on the guys. If they can not match the name they will ask who know XXXXXXXX. If no one raises their hand then they will ask each day and the runs will get longer each day. I know and I did not post a picture but a saying. Its your sailor so do as you please, if I get a complant on the picture I will remove it.

  • My heart goes out to all the guys in 2 9 0.  Our son was one of those who made it through.  Even after reading all the books on BUD/S and HW only those who have gone through it really know what this accomplishment means.  God bless them all as they continue on their journey.

  • A long day is starting and I am hoping each of you are now and have catch up on sleep and getting your mind wrapped around what is about to happen. All thought it was about 15 Classes ago it is still fresh in our memory and we have referred back to it several time as the training continued on through the next Phases.

Guys, one of the major Milestones is near and I though I might give you some of my thoughts on what will be happening. This will be the 290th time young men have faced this week of challenge and I am sure that each of the guys and their Loved Ones experienced the same feelings you are having now. For whatever reason some of the guys won’t make it through this week. I know some that did not make it through the first few hours. The good side is that I’ve never heard of and Loved One who didn’t make it through this week of training. Everyone will survive, some will be taking another path in the Navy, some may be rolled back, and some will finish; but each of you will be there at the end to cheer them into the next phase of Navy life. There are some things I will not post on a public site but have no problem talking about in private, so please feel free to PM me if you have questions or just want to talk. Each of you should be very proud of what your guy has accomplished to date, and regardless of how this week turns out, he has done what very few have even tried. My Family and I feel that each guy in class is a winner even if they do not make it to the end. I wouldn’t have attempted that path 47 years ago regardless of my fitness or background. This is something that many dream of but very few accomplish. As we went through “Hell Week” I kept telling myself “No news is good news.” Then I’d remember “The Only Easy Day was Yesterday”. Those two thought are a rollercoaster of emotions and you will experience every single one. When this is over and you are talking with your guy listen for and watch the way he tells about what he experienced. He will be proud, smiling, and tell you that it wasn’t that hard. As the weeks good by and you hear about what is going on ask your guy if the week was as hard a HW. My GS has told me he would rather go through HW again than some of the weeks that are ahead of them. Guys please remember that everything happens for a reason. Be Proud of your guy and encourage him regardless of this week’s outcome. Be his support and listen. Always tell him how proud you are of his life accomplishments and to look toward the future. It too brings reward and pride. (If he decides to drop accept that decision. He will have time to make a decision on his next step. Listen and SUPPORT. Life isn’t ending.)

Remember to keep your feelings and all you learn this next week with you at all times. It will not be the last time you have this experience. Remember, this is the middle of Phase I. You must still face Phase II, Phase III, and SQT before you reach the goal. (And yes, there are those who drop or are rolled through all of the additional training.) As time goes by check this site for other new BUDS groups and read what they are feeling. Join one and jump in and help them when you can. You will be able to help others get through a week like this much better than I can. We are a Family, a very big Family and we should keep in touch with each other. I know I want to know how your guys are doing, the good times and the not so good. I may have been there or it might help me in the future.

I have gone on for to long so now I will let my wife proof read this. I cannot post long messages or make any decision with out my wife’s approval except off of a menu and she has the right to over rule that choice.

This is Grandma……. I wanted to add a side note. Please keep in mind the security that surrounds this position. It’s best if you use PM’s or emails to discuss what’s happening this week. We had a daily report. I look back now and wonder if that was a good or bad thing. I had trouble sleeping and did a lot of pac
