cell phones

Our son Kyle is graduating from boot camp on July 17th. He is not scheduled to leave for "A" school until the 25th of July. In his last letter, he has requested that we bring his cell phone with us for him to have.He is being assigned to ship 5 until he leaves for "A" school.I read that as long as they are assigned to RTC, they are not allowed cell phones. Is this still true for Ship 5 rules? When can he receive his cell phone after he goes to "A" school?Does anyone know? I do not want to leave the phone for him and get him in trouble.Mike

  • Mike,
It is my understanding that cell phones are not allowed on the RTC side of the base even after a sailor has graduated bootcamp. I am under the assumption that ship 5 is basically a holding barracks for those who will be shipping to another base for their A-School. Unless they have special cell phone priviledges while on that ship, I would say the answer to your question is no he will not be allowed to have his cell phone there. I would recommend that you still take his cell phone with you to PIR. Kyle will be eager to use it as much as he can while on liberty that weekend. If the rule is such that he will be allowed to keep it then you'll be prepared to leave the phone with him. If not, you will need to take it with you when you part ways including when you drop him off at the base at the end of each day's liberty time. Ordinarily, once the sailor has reported to his school location they will be assigned a barracks and given their mailing address. He can then notify you of his new address so that you may send items like his cell phone, Ipod, laptop, camera, etc. to him. I would also suggest that incase Kyle is not able to keep his cell phone after PIR that he or you purchase some calling cards for him to use until he is allowed to have his.

Congratulations to Kyle on his upcoming PIR!!
