Thanks Gary. He's enjoying the wait checking out Chicago and Six Flags. Thanks for the info Glen. I don't know much about GM's but that sounds like what Devon wanted to get into.

Alucard - our son is a GM assigned to MSRON 2 (Maritime Expeditionary Security Forces. He's on boat team that use small boats to patrol coastal waters, escort large ships/subs thru hi-threat areas, interdict piracy, protect oil platforms and do some shore assignments providing temporary security for assets that need it (planes, ships, facilities, people). They are highly mobile small units. This squadron was deployed in Kuwait in past and stage from there to wherever they're needed in that theatre. Just one example of duty for GMs that does not involve being on a "big gray ship." He has not had C school....completed A school, took 2 wks leave then assigned to unit with lots more training for 4 mo or so before deployment.

Good to hear he is doing fine. Is A.T.T. school next or is there another class that replaced S.C.C.? I am trying to stay current with the classes. My son has now completed 5 full weeks of hold time after finishing A-School. No orders yet. Only good thing is he moved from the Cole to the transfer barracks #178. He thought he died and went to heaven. His duty assignment for this month is 1 hour. He switched with his roommate so he could drive home this weekend. Tell Devon, things do get better, its just the wait. Gary T.

Hello. Devon did move again to his new barracks. Said there is five to a room. He sent me pics and it had a lot of things I never had when I was in like a fridge and microwave. He's still on hold and racking up ride time at Six Flags.

Alucard, I do not have an answer to your question. Most GM's who have graduated A-School have gone on to some form of C-School. Some have chosen to be Riverines (Brown Water Navy) with deployment in many theaters. I have heard talk but can not verify that some sailors (unknown rates) have been deployed as security. I do think if such a deployment were to be a reality the chosen sailors would have to spend a much more rigorous training then is given in NAVY A-School. I think it would involve a Marine type basic and combat training prior to the sailor being deployed. Gary T.

Are Navy Gunners Mates currently being deployed to aid combat troops in iraq and afghanistan? What is their average time spent on the ground? Would a GM fresh out of bootcamp and A school be deployed to iraq or afghanistan?

Ken, A.T.T., is a self paced computer oriented class room. Each sailor can move at his own pace. My son had his P.I R. on 13/03/09 and didn't start A.T.T. until 27/04/09. The class ended 0n 26/05/09. It lasted about 4 weeks and two days with a holiday thrown in there.

Once A.T.T. school finished Nick was on hold for 9 weeks or 45 business days. He started GM A-School on 27/07/09. A-School lasted 10 weeks until 02/10/09 (military dates). During the final week of A-School they selected orders. Choices given by class ranking. (1,2,3, etc.) The following week after A-School graduation is F.A.T.S. training. (Firearms Training Simulator).

Once F.A.T.S. week is finished its hold time waiting for hard copy orders. This is my sons fourth week of HOLD. HOLD is the most dreaded word in the NAVY. During the early to mid part of 09 HOLD was the word of the day. Today I think things are moving much more quickly. The HOLDS may be for C-School now. Any questions ask. Gary T.

Cody's PIR was 9/11 and he moved "accross the street" on 9/16. He has been on hold until yesterday when he "classed up" for ATT. He does not know how long ATT lasts or when he will start GM A-School. He sounded happy last night to tell me about ATT starting today. Now he feels like he is moving forward.

Rich, usually when new graduates move to the A-School side of the base they are housed in the Enterprise. It is the oldest barracks left on base and is scheduled to be torn down sometime in the future. It seem all sailors who attend I.N.D.O.C. are assigned to the Enterprise. I don't know for sure what class comes next. It was S.C.C. (Service Common Core) which I understand is now taught in basic training. If there is a new class please fill me in. The class which followed S.C.C. is A.T.T. (Apprentice Tech Training) basic electronics and electricity. Finally GM A-School. I have been told most of the hold times experienced by sailors during the first part to mid 2009 have disappeared. Most classes seem to be moving quite rapidly. Devon may move at least 2 more times prior to A-School. Gary T.
