Our Goal

After talking with many of you I've realized that our sailors and/or their families often run into tough patches and could use a hand to help them through tough times. Whether it be financial, spiritual, or just feeling down about something or someone, we want to develop a list of resources that are available for them to get some support and help in dealing with a life crisis. We invite any of you to use these resources to help and if you find a link we don't have, please add it so we can aid someone else.

5/26/2011 - WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- As part of an ongoing effort to better serve the military community, the American Red Cross will move to a single Telephone number for its emergency communication services in June.

Beginning June 13, service members and their families can use one toll-free number, 877-272-7337, to send an urgent message to a service member. "The Red Cross has always been there for us," said Robert L. Gordon III, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for military community and family policy. "It's critically important to our men and women serving away from home that their families know whom to call in the event of an emergency. The Red Cross is now making it even easier to make that call."

In the past, military families living outside an installation needed to remember the phone number for their local Red Cross chapters for emergency communications, while those living on a military installation used the 877-272-7337 number. Now, military members and their families can use this single number to initiate an emergency communication, regardless of where they live.

For those people stationed overseas, the three options for calling will remain the same: calling 877-272-7337 direct, accessing the number through a military operator or calling their local Red Cross station.

"An emergency situation can be a very stressful time for a military family, and having just one common telephone number to remember can make a difficult situation a little easier," said Sherri Brown, the senior vice president of Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces. "U.S. military personnel and their families can remain confident that the Red Cross will be there to keep them connected when there is a crisis at home."

Through this number, Red Cross emergency communications services can put service members in touch with their families following the death or serious illness of an immediate family member, the birth of a service member's child or grandchild, or when a family faces other emergencies. Additional Red Cross services, such as case management and emergency financial assistance, are also available.

Hi Paul.., Did Kat make her original two requests by submitting an SF-180 via eVetRecs hosted by the National Archives site?
http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-servi...

Maybe a long-shot, but she might also try her local VA office if she registered with the state.

..Wish her luck!

my turn to ask for advice. Kat posted this on her FB page:

I've requested a replacement of my member 2 dd214 TWICE in the last six months and haven't gotten anything in return. I can't get my tuition waiver without it and they keep blowing me off.

I.m not sure who she should now turn to to try to get some movement here. Any experience here would help! Thanks!!

Hi! My son Davey is currently deployed to Afghanistan. He is stationed in Gulfport, MS NMCB 133s, he's a Seabee. His Homecoming is going to between the last week of July or by the last week of Aug. I recently was laid off from my job 2 months ago & still haven't been able to find anything. Davey has never asked me for anything big, but throughout his deployment every time i talk to him he has begged me to be a Homecoming for him. This is his first one & needless to say things on my end have gone from bad to worse (none of this he knows yet)! He has a 7 year old brother who is extremely close to him despite the age difference. Jordan had ended up in therapy 3 times a week since he left in March! There is NO support for the military at all here! He just knows that mommy is lying to him & Davey's either hurt really bad or not coming back! I have tried to reassure him that Davey's fine. During this deployment Jordan & Daveys puppy died suddenly 5 weeks ago & their cat also died suddenly 2 weeks ago! I have no one & nowhere else to turn for help, i have tried numerous online websites that his Ombudsman emailed me & several i researched online on my own. Can someone PLEASE tell me if they know of anyway i can either get a grant or some kind of financial assistance so we can be at Davey's Homecoming? I have no family left to turn to for help! It's important for me to be there for him as his mom, but Jordan's therapist keeps stressing that seeing Davey come back safe & sound is going to give me back my happy little boy i had several months ago. PLEASE don't think i am giving you a hard luck story cause i am honestly not! I am desperately trying to find someway to get to Gulfport to be there for my son & time is quickly running out! Davey is coming home much earlier than originally expected! Praise God! Any info would be greatly appreciated & an answer to prayer! Thank you & God Bless! Missy

Thanks to Dixie for this amazing list of links--- primarily for our veterans, but great info for all military. You should make a note of these and keep them handy in case.

ALL VETS SHOULD COPY THIS

Someone has gone to a lot of trouble. If this helps one person, then it was worthwhile... Pass on to all veterans!
Below are web-sites that provide information on Veterans benefits and how to file/ask for them. Accordingly, there are many sites that explain how to obtain books, military/medical records, information and how to appeal a denied claim with the VA. Please pass this information on to every Veteran you know. Nearly 100% of this information is free and available for all veterans, the only catch is: you have to ask for it, because they won't tell you about a specific benefit unless you ask for it. You need to know what questions to ask so the right doors open for you -- and then be ready to have an advocate who is willing to work with and for you, stay in the process, and press for your rights and your best interests.
