Our son reports for basic training at Great Lakes on June 9 and then is scheduled to go to Pensacola for IT A school.  His contract says that A school will be 14 weeks but everything I've read online…Continue

Bill -

Thanks a lot for that information. I booked a room at the Navy Gateway Inn on NAS from the 9-11. His graduation is supposed to be on the 10th. If I find out that we can leave on the 10th, after graduation, I will cancel my second night and get on the road ASAP.

I am waiting for a 100% confirmation on his graduation date so I could book a flight down. He was told a while back that it was March 10th. I know they missed 3 days of school because of the ice situation a couple weeks ago, so I am not sure the date will stay the same. Hopefully we get an answer soon.

Thanks again!

Bob

Bob T.,

I can tell you that my son was able to leave the same day. He graduated on Friday morning, 22 November and was on a flight home that evening. Then we had 14 days with him! It was awesome.....until he had to leave again. You kind of get used to having them back....then you have to give them back to the Navy! Hope this all works out for you and your son!

Hey guys! My son is scheduled to graduate on March 10th. Are they typically allowed to leave right after graduation?

I plan on flying down the day before graduation so I could drive back up to NY with him.

Thanks!

Just remembering 20 years ago on jan. 17, 1994 we took our son to join the Navy.  It was snowing so badthey were going to stay at a hotel but he came home with another sailor.  So proud of him for his 20 year anniversary.  He is in Pensacola.

Jared, talked to my son today. He completed PO Indoc. Not sure how long it will take from here but at least he has this part behind him!

Jared,

Thanks! He did get that page 13 and has it with him. I have not received any updates this week from him. I talked with him on Monday just to see how day 1 went but it was nothing but a day of paperwork. Hoping to get some updates soon.
Thanks again and I will keep you posted on his progress.

Bill,

That form is the page 13 I mentioned in the earlier posts. PO Indon will come shortly. It sounds like your son is doing well. Many opportunities are there for the taking.

George, thanks for the info. My son reported today. I am hopeful he will discuss it with his LPO. Since he graduated with honors, he filled out a form (that was then subsequently signed of on by instructors and up to and including the CPO) requesting accelerated promotion. He also, in turn, signed up for another year making his current enlistment 5 years in total. He has a mentor on base so hopefully he can give him some counsel that will lead to the early promo sooner than later. Also while he completed RAP duty here at home, he road with the CPO. He said he graduated from A school with honors as well and petitioned the accelerated promotion program. He was an EOD but said he had to perform in his first command for 3 months to prove himself. After that he was promoted to E-4. However, he was then eligible for promotion to E-5 in only another 6 months. So I guess there are many variables and I have to just trust my sailor to figure it out.

Bill Black, your son should complete the Petty Officer Leadership correspondence course asap, then request to take the leadership exam after completing the course. Since he completed the "A" school, he should request to take the rating Petty Officer exam. More than likely he is eligible to take the next exam.

Bill Black, often graduation from "A" school gets E3 promoted to E4 immediately. Not true for all graduates in all ratings though. Time in Rate from E3 to E4 eligibility was one year when I was in, but then they have to pass the rating exam and the petty officer leadership exam.

However, passing the rating exam wasn't always enough to get promoted to E4. A sailor's results may be PNA (passed but not advanced) depending upon other factors such as evaluations, the needs of the ship (availability of open positions at the higher level onboard), score in relation to other sailor's score, etc.
