Caity is in a training cycle. She has shot her CAT III Quals and now has her Hummer license... a dangerous thing to give a Bostonian!

Welcome to the family, Shaun. As your Son progresses you will have lots of questions....ask away! Our Sailors serve in many different factions of the Navy....Expeditionary, MWD, PRP, Base Security, etc. These opportunities will open for him as he gets to A School and will be based upon his performance and the needs of the Navy. Between the lot of us, we will get you the answers you seek. Good Luck to your Son in his endeavors....

Welcome Shaun!

We are happy to have you on board. The next 8 weeks are going to be quite an adventure for both you and your son! We help in any way we can and give you some useful info along the way!!

I am sure the most important thing to you right now is communication. You might receive a call and letters sometime soon (it varies). There will be a period somewhere in the middle that you won't hear anything for a couple of weeks. Don't panic, this is normal. It is a period leading up to an important part of their training. The best call you get comes right after this period.

As far as PIR goes...Your son will give you that date sometime in the next few weeks. If you are planning on going. the best advice I can give you is to attend "Sarges" Meet n Greet. He has it just before the PIR and the info he gives is invaluable!

Again Welcome aboard and ask whatever questions you have!!

So glad to have found this post, Searching the internet and reading hundreds of opinions on MA rate from people you don't even know if they know what they are talking about- ugh! . I look fwd to reading all of your posts for some real information, and know you all are feeling the same thing I am. My son left last week for Basic and we don't have his division or PIR info yet.

Hard to believe one year ago Amber graduated bootcamp and off to MA school. She is now in Rota Spain and having a ball. Waiting for November for E4 exam results to see if she made it. In my heart, I know she did.

Feeling a little down sitting at my desk looking at her picture.

I would refer you first to the command's website. It has a lot of info that is useful for onboarding and for families.

As you probably know, Oceana NAS is in Virginia Beach and is part of the Greater Norfolk Navy Base Complex. (Our largest Naval installation) This has its up and down sides.

On the plus side, there are plenty of services available, lots of MWR activities and lots of special interest groups to join up with. Multiple Exchanges and Commissaries to choose from, and many things in the community to 'support the troops'. And since there are so many Navy personnel there, all of the support activities you can possibly think of are right there in the region, you just have to wait for an appointment.

On the minus side, since Oceana is such a large command it is VERY easy to get lost in the noise of it all. It is harder, tho not impossible, to build up the personal relationships necessary to support 'special circumstances' that come up in life. There are also a lot of sub-commands hosted on that base which can add to confusion. And since it is an Air Base, there is a disproportionate number of Officers on that base which can bring added headaches.

My experiences with Oceana were back in the 90's so I'm sure that MANY things have changed since then! And I hope that someone else can comment on the current conditions, especially for MAs. But I would expect that the general experience and feeling of base life to still be about the same.

I enjoyed my time in the Tidewater area. I trust that your son will as well! For what it's worth; it is the only area of the country where I have see people speed up on the highway when it rains! Oh, and on the rare occasions that it does snow there, everything shuts down, because they don't have the equipment to deal with it.

I hope this is all helpful to you and your son.

Scott ~ Well said.  It was a reminder to me of the dangers that our military (and especially our MAs) face every day that they go to stand their watch.  My prayers are with the families of all those who were affected by yesterdays attack.

My heart has been ripped in two by the events of today. The fact that ANY of the members of my Navy family were hurt today is pain enough; I hope that it isn't amplified by knowing that any of our MA family was harmed as well.

My deepest condolences to all those families and friends affected today. My prayers are with you.

While it is hard to believe, there is good even in the ashes of evil. Two events reminded me that this Nation still stands as ONE. And it still supports its military. Upon learning of the events of the day:

1) A former shipmate posted to Facebook, and was responded to instantly, with nothing but support by so many people that it astounded me!

2) Later on one of former co-workers called me to make sure that my daughter, and son-in-law, were OK. (Which they are)

Neither was amazing, in and of itself. But to me together they reveal that there is still an undercurrent of support for those that serve America. Despite the disdain or neglect that might generally be displayed towards our Military, deep down, we still do respect what it takes to but yourself in harm's way.

I hope that those who have lost will be comforted. That those hurt will be healed quickly. And that we shall not soon forget what those who serve put at risk.
