Does anyone know if "A" school starts right away or do they have to wait to fill the class up first?

Jim....Great that you had a chance to visit with your Son! It sounds like things are going well for him....Greece would be a nice trip! Best of luck to him in his career....

Had a great visit with my Dog Handler sailor while he was home on leave.  The Navy has been good for him.  He made Petty Officer 3rd Class last Fall and Will take the test for 2nd class next time around.  He's also working on finishing his college degree.

He's in Bahrain for another four months, then heads to Greece for at least a year (can't wait to visit him there!).  He plans on reenlisting for another four years if the Navy will let him.

Best wishes to all of you Dads and your sailors.

Jim

Checking back in after a while off the site, I've been reading but not writin', so I just wanted to say hey to old mates and welcome the new MA dads and moms.  This coming Sunday will mark a year since my son Chris received his badge. For those folks going down for a graduation tomorrow, check the river on the Riverwalk downtown San Antonio. I know they color the water green for St. Patrick's Day, it was still green on the 18th when we hit the town after graduation. I hope it is already running the color of my sainted mother's heritage. Not that that is the only reason to raid the Riverwalk.  It's a great feature of SA.

V - the best way for your daughter to get some choice is for her to score well on her exams while in A School.  Scoring at or near the top doesn't always guarantee choice, but it will definitely help.  About half way through MA training the sailors find out what positions are available (MSF, MWD, etc.) and then get to indicate their choices.

I don't believe that there is any set "formula" as to assignments. It is simply a matter of what assignments are available. Choice is usually by class rank (test scores, etc.), but is at the whim of the instructors. In the case of my daughter, it was done alphabetically! During her A school, she was told of the options possible (PRP-guarding Nuc sites, Military dogs-not for the faint of heart and extremely competetive, ship/shore duty, and Mobile Expeditionary Security Squadrons.) Deployments can range anywhere from 6 months on up....it is all based on the needs of the Navy! She will choose from available assignments when it is her turn...and that is about all of the say that she will have in the matter.

Military dogs is one of the most dangerous positions that she could have...it is not just because "I like dogs!"....Living conditions are poor when overseas and you are on the frontlines in most situations. It is also pretty physically demanding.

Gonna be a fish out of water in this group for a minute... my sailor to be does not leave for BC until 062012 and is currently counting down the days until that happens.. is currently under 100, but I don't keep track like she does... She tells me she is mentally and physically ready for BC, but we will see... I will be typing and sending letters every other day until her PIR... have a question for you all with seasoned sailors - Once they graduate from MA school is there a firm formula for how they get allocated stateside, or out of the country, and generally how long is their deployment if out of the country... Had heard that they could specifically request base duty, versus ship and shore duty, and just wondered how true that statement was... I read the post by Kyle, but just trying to get some idea... other than that what C-schools are most going to, she would like to get into dog handler to begin with, but I have heard that DH like everything else is dependent on openings, but what are the 'real' probabilities... appreciate any and all answers to a concerned dad that is trying to stay ahead of the curve on information... PS - she is currently Navy DEP and signed papers for MA school in San Antonio after BC is completed.

Hey Tom my son graduated from MA school a couple of yrs ago and went strait over seas for 13 months then he came back to the states for 3 yrs. His graduating class was stationed anywhere from FT.Worth Tx to Germany to Japan so theirs no telling where she could really end up.One thing for sure is she will go where shes needed most. Thank her for all of us military families.
