Jeanne, I noticed no one responded to your comment about places to stay.  I hope you had a nice visit with your son!  We are visiting our son in early August and I was wondering if you could offer any tips after your visit.  Where did you stay, do you recommend any fun excursions?  Any help would be appreciated!

I'm visiting my son this weekend and bringing him his car. Does anyone have any suggestions about what to do in Jacksonville for the weekend?  I would like to go kayaking or see some other sites.  Also, can anyone recommend a few good restaurants in the area?  Thanks.

Thank you for your input.  I've made arrangements to take my son's car down there via the auto train the first weekend in June.  Now for another question.  If I stay in a hotel off base how do I get onto the base to pick him up?  Someone told me that he has to get me a pass. Does anyone know where he gets this pass?  Is the pass good for the entire weekend so that I can come and go on and off base? Also, has anyone stayed on base at the Navy Lodge?  I appreciate any guidance that you could offer.  My son is assigned to HSL 42. Thank you.

Jeanne, my son just got to Jax about a month ago and purchased a car and loves the freedom.  One thing I was surprised at though was that his commander wasn't very happy with him getting one so soon--not quite sure why.

Can anyone answer this question?  My son is 19 years old and arrived in Jacksonville two weeks ago.  (He's been assigned to a helicopter squadron.) The first thing he did was buy himself a bike to get to and from work but he really wants us to make arrangements to bring his car down there. (We live in CT). Can anyone tell me if having a car on NAS is really necessary?  I'm a bit concerned about trusting him with this responsibility. Thanks.

My son Matt will soon be a "Pelican"!  He's looking forward to finally be done with training and begin the "real" job!

You guys are pretty quiet here.  SO, I'll report on my Sailor.  Graduation was awesome.  Five family members attended and three of us stayed for the weekend.  He is settled into his new Squadron and working long, long hours and loving every minute of it.  First deployment ahead and Mom's nervous, son is very excited.

My son got the issue resolved. Once he reached more than 18 years of service, they cannot drop him as per Article 10 of the US code. They have to allow him to complete his 20 years, but only 20 and then he is out. He has reenlisted for two years to finish the 20 that he wants to complete.

It was all caused by conflicting advice he got from his Navy detailers. Just another example of the mistakes that are made with records and advice. It is best to watch your back and take care of yourself because no one else will.

Stephen, I would encourage him to contact any legal counsel that may be available. It seems the Navy is trying to trim the ranks any way they can. I'm concerned about my son ater the report of them cutting the lower level Petty Officers with less than 5 years in....that's mine.

Hi Dads, (ok, I'm a mom) my son has been at JAX for about 7 months.  He's about to graduate AWN (the sonar guy) and will be stationed here too.  It was his last choice, but the Squadron he's assigned to will be the first to be trained on the P-8 !!  At least that's what he's been told.  He's anxious to get a place off base and has plans to do that ASAP.  I'm an active member on Navy for Moms and I wanted to check out this site to see if I'm missing anything!
