Welcome to the NavyDads Media Center !

Share your recommendations for books and other media that you think would be of interest to other NavyDads.  I have numerous books I've read, and recently listened to via audiobook download, that generally concentrate on WWII Navy history that tell the recent combat history of the Navy and show where many current Navy doctrines and traditions have evolved from.  I find the stories compelling and make me even more proud to have a daughter that is a Navy veteran and a son on active duty and part of this long tradition of service.  Won't you share your recommendations as well?

Yeah that is an incredible place. I have been there around Christmas time and have seen all the Christmas Trees from around the world but need to add this.

Wow! Can you believe 7 years has past? My son is coming up on his 1 year anniversary 1 May. Almost impossible to fathom!

It's at the Science Museum and is a worthwhile stop.....

this was in '07

Well that one should be up on the list given that I live in the Indianapolis area and only about 3 1/2 hours from Chi-town!

and from the "other side", you've got the U-505 museum in Chicago...that's a pretty awesome display

That's awesome Bill something exciting to look forward to! If you're ever in the Bay Area up here, there's USS Pampanito (SS-383) and USS Hornet (CV-12) Museum...

Yes, hoping to see the Wisconsin in April or May. My son is stationed in Norfolk and will be visiting him sometime this spring. I would love to go aboard one of the 6 carriers home ported there but I understand you have to give 4 years of your life to the Navy to do so.....and they don't take washed up old guys like me! :-) Also, I travel to New Jersey and Philadelphia a couple of times a year on business. I have seen the Philly Navy Yard but across the river in Camden is the USS New Jersey. Can't wait to see that. The NJ crew was really ticked after all the action she saw in WW II when it was decided to have the Japanese surrender on the Mo instead of the New Jersey. But that was an appeasement of Truman since he was President and from Missouri. Also his daughter Christened the Mo.

You've got Norfolk: USS Wisconsin BB64. San Pedro, CA: USS Iowa BB61, The USS Texas (BB35) in LaPorte, TX, U.S. Navy Submarine Force Library and Museum USS Nautilus) , located on the Thames River near Groton, Connecticut just to name a few.......

Amen! I am 59 but will probably try to hang on for another 7 years to make it to full SS age. One of the things I want to do....bucket list.....is to visit every U.S. Navy Ship museum. I have the USS North Carolina and USS Midway under my belt. But the big one would be to get to Pearl to see the USS Arizona memorial and the Big Mo. Not sure I want to wait 7 years though. It may be a bit tougher to climb around those bad boys at age 66!

Paul, Eyes on Target sounds like a good one also. I may have to add that to the collection. My problem is instead of reading at night I watch the old Navy movies I have purchased along with the Hero Ships collection. I just order 7 more classics (only $85 for 7 DVDs). These include "Action in the North Atlantic", "The Bedford Incident", "The Enemy Below" (I have the book as well) and "They Were Expendable". Once all 7 get here I believe I will have most of the top 25 all time Navy movies. I love these darn things and am usually up till midnight or even 0100 watching them. But with my collection of books stacking up, I have got to devote more time to reading. Who has time to work for a living......!! LOL!
