Welcome to the NavyDads Media Center !

Share your recommendations for books and other media that you think would be of interest to other NavyDads.  I have numerous books I've read, and recently listened to via audiobook download, that generally concentrate on WWII Navy history that tell the recent combat history of the Navy and show where many current Navy doctrines and traditions have evolved from.  I find the stories compelling and make me even more proud to have a daughter that is a Navy veteran and a son on active duty and part of this long tradition of service.  Won't you share your recommendations as well?

Oh yes, I read a very good book many years ago in college. I believe it was called The Iron Coffins. Written by one of the few surviving U-Boat Captains. He should have died several times.

Thanks guys. Keep 'em coming. Two other good movies:of course! Hunt for Red October, The Bedford Incident(which I just recently accidentally discovered).  Have yet to see Torpedo in the Water. Any good? Especially like non-fiction stories and documentaries. Have watched several on youtube, etc., but always looking for anything new that is good and accurate. My son also wants to read more(including history and biographies), but right now my main goal is for him to get through A and Power Schools after Boot.

Grant, forgot to mention my all time favorite WW II sub movie 'Run Silent Run Deep'.

'Das Boot' is also a classic.   It's a film about a German U boat and it's crew.  It's translated, but a great job.

Hey Grant, welcome!

If you're going for sub books, check out 'The War Below' by James Scott.  It's also a good one for WW II sub history and strategy development.

I am currently reading "The Magical Stranger" by Stephen Rodrick. Here is the synopsis:
The Magical Stranger is a moving story of love and sacrifice, fathers and sons, heroism and duty, soldiers and the families they leave behind.

On November 28, 1979, squadron commander and Navy pilot Peter Rodrick died when his plane crashed in the Indian Ocean, leaving behind a devastated wife, two daughters, and a 13-year-old son.

In this powerful, beautifully written book, journalist Stephen Rodrick explores the life and death of the man who indelibly shaped his life, even as he remained a mystery. Through adolescence and into adulthood, Stephen Rodrick struggled to fully grasp the reality of his father’s death and its permanence.

Grant, two that I would highly recommend (not 2014 but definitely more recent than say WWII history), is "No Higher Honor" (1988 saving the Samuel B. Roberts) and "Front Burner" (2000 saving the USS Cole).

I would stop by the USNI shop as they have an extensive list of books:
