Welcome to the NavyDads Media Center !

Share your recommendations for books and other media that you think would be of interest to other NavyDads.  I have numerous books I've read, and recently listened to via audiobook download, that generally concentrate on WWII Navy history that tell the recent combat history of the Navy and show where many current Navy doctrines and traditions have evolved from.  I find the stories compelling and make me even more proud to have a daughter that is a Navy veteran and a son on active duty and part of this long tradition of service.  Won't you share your recommendations as well?

Ralph, sounds like you cannot go wrong with either choice. I love the books on WWII. But it was nice to read about events that were relevant to our day and age with Front Burner and No Higher Honor. I have The Admirals...just haven't got to it yet. I also have individual books on King, Nimitz, and Halsey. Currently reading Neptune's Inferno: The US Navy at Guadalcanal. Another historic masterpiece! James Hornfischer is an excellent author. He also wrote The Last Stand of the Tin Can Soldiers. Epic book!

Yes, I own and have watched numerous times, Run Silent, Run Deep with Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. Good B&W but you are correct, it doesn't emphasize the need to take out the merchant ships to cripple the Japanese economic resources.

In The Admirals, the author doesn't spend much time on submarines specifically, but he does re-enforce that they played a major part in the Pacific theater.

Still a toss up between No Higher Honor and The War Below after I finish 1776.  I guess there's no bad choice.

you know, we all saw all the great B&W movies about the submarine war in the Pacific and taking on the Japanese Navy....but I didn't really realize how important it was to destroy their merchant fleet and deprive them of the resources they needed to maintain the war effort.....

Now you are really piquing my interest! I read both Front Burner and No Higher Honor at your recommendation and thoroughly enjoyed both! So this one may be on the near term acquisition list for reading!

just learning about "Dick" O'Kane and the Tang makes the book worthwhile...

I just read the book review. This sounds like a great book indeed! I may have to wait and read it in the Spring....and outdoors! I believe just reading about submarine life in war will make me claustrophobic!! :-) The ITS rating was open to my son. I was grateful he did not elect to pursue that one!

Yes, I have already watched them 3 times. I pick something new up each time.
