Welcome to the NavyDads Media Center !

Share your recommendations for books and other media that you think would be of interest to other NavyDads.  I have numerous books I've read, and recently listened to via audiobook download, that generally concentrate on WWII Navy history that tell the recent combat history of the Navy and show where many current Navy doctrines and traditions have evolved from.  I find the stories compelling and make me even more proud to have a daughter that is a Navy veteran and a son on active duty and part of this long tradition of service.  Won't you share your recommendations as well?

Paul, I have that as well. I went on a spree and bought enough books to keep me reading for a while! I wish I had a little more time for it as there are so many I want to get after.

picked this one up.....it's on the "next to read" list

"Only four men in American history have been promoted to the five-star rank of Admiral of the Fleet: William Leahy, Ernest King, Chester Nimitz, and William Halsey. These four men were the best and the brightest the navy produced, and together they led the U.S. navy to victory in World War II, establishing the United States as the world's greatest fleet.

In THE ADMIRALS, award-winning historian Walter R. Borneman tells their story in full detail for the first time. Drawing upon journals, ship logs, and other primary sources, he brings an incredible historical moment to life, showing us how the four admirals revolutionized naval warfare forever with submarines and aircraft carriers, and how these men-who were both friends and rivals-worked together to ensure that the Axis fleets lay destroyed on the ocean floor at the end of World War II."

Yes, agreed. I read the Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors. I know Samuel Roberts was killed in heroic action evacuating Marines during the Battle of Guadalcanal. Awarded the Navy Cross posthumously. Also, as I recall there was some information about the 1988 mining of the ship (#3) in A Sailors History of the U.S. Navy.

Before you read No Higher Honor I believe it's important to understand the legacy of the USS Samuel B Roberts.  Highly advise you read either For Crew and Country: The Inspirational True Story of Bravery and Sacrifice Aboard the USS Samuel B Roberts by John Wukovits or The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors: The Extraordinary World War II Story of the U.S. Navy's Finest Hour by James D. Hornfischer.  They will put the events of the fourth ship named the "Sammy B" in context and show why that ship's name is one of the most revered in the US Navy.
