Welcome to the NavyDads Media Center !

Share your recommendations for books and other media that you think would be of interest to other NavyDads.  I have numerous books I've read, and recently listened to via audiobook download, that generally concentrate on WWII Navy history that tell the recent combat history of the Navy and show where many current Navy doctrines and traditions have evolved from.  I find the stories compelling and make me even more proud to have a daughter that is a Navy veteran and a son on active duty and part of this long tradition of service.  Won't you share your recommendations as well?

also recommend:

Lucky Lady: The WWII Heroics of the USS Santa Fe and the Franklin by Steve Jackson

Inferno: The Epic Life and Death Struggle of the USS Franklin in WWII by Joseph A. Springer

Clash of Carriers: The True Story of the Marianas Turkey Shoot of WWII by Barrett Tillman

In Harm's Way: The Sinking of the USS Indianapolis and the Extraordinary Story of the Survivors by Doug Stanton

and finally

Intrepid: The Epic Story of America's Most Legendary Warship by Bill White and Robert Grandy

This list goes on a long way, but is a good start for those wanting to learn some details of WWII- all good reads.

To get a sense of leadership styles- I would place Sea of Thunder: Four Commanders and the Last Great Naval Campaign 1941-1945 by Evan Thomas on the required reading list. To talk about Halsey without understanding how he compared with Kurita, Ugaki, and Evans is somewhat shortsighted.....

I am just starting chapter 11 of Front Burner. Haven't had a lot of time this week to read. But so far it has been very interesting. I can't say I want to run out and buy Tuna Snack packs and crackers, however!! :-) The next on my list is No Greater Honor. From there I have about 10 others in queue including Enterprise; Neptune's Inferno, Nimitz (about Admiral Chester Nimitz; Admiral Bull Halsey (that is pretty good. I started it but switched to Front Burner when I found out what it was about). Finally, if you haven't read "Abandon Ship" about the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis, that is really good. Heart wrenching but well written. Being from the Indianapolis area it was a must for me.

Finished Front Burner today....very interesting.....worth learning about the first major attack in the "War on Terror" and what happens when the right hand doesn't communicate with the left hand......

Am in the epilogue right now....THAT is an interesting chapter.....coming so close to 9-11 was a stark lesson what  can happen when intel is not clearly disseminated and when imaginations are not allowed to run free....

Just downloaded the Kindle version.  Looking forward to it.

I finished 'American Gun: A History of the U.S. in Ten Firearms' by Chris Kyle.  Some fascinating history I had not hear before.  Great book.

Earlier I read 'Humble Heroes, How The USS Nashville CL43 Fought WWII' by Steven Bustin.  Talk about getting bounced around.  They certainly had some strange missions.   Great read.

Paul, I just finished chapter 6. The book is well written and very sobering reality check on what our sailors face.
