Welcome to the NavyDads Media Center !

Share your recommendations for books and other media that you think would be of interest to other NavyDads.  I have numerous books I've read, and recently listened to via audiobook download, that generally concentrate on WWII Navy history that tell the recent combat history of the Navy and show where many current Navy doctrines and traditions have evolved from.  I find the stories compelling and make me even more proud to have a daughter that is a Navy veteran and a son on active duty and part of this long tradition of service.  Won't you share your recommendations as well?

If you're into fishing and/or an avid fly fisherman, this book is a great read! Written by the CO of the USS Anchorage LPD 23 - during his tour in Iraq...

Paul, Gary:

Lay-on, lay-off? Not wax on wax off? LOL! I might just take a pass on the Blue Jacket's manual until I have read all other books about the Navy.....so there better be a library in heaven with it! I could see my son handing me the book with the same comments about here's everything you could want to know. If you don't find it in there then come to me with the question!! Ha-ha! BTW, I am really enjoying the book "A Sailor's History of the U.S. Navy". Almost finished.

Paul funny you mentioned that... I have Oliver's copy of the Blue Jacket Manual as well. When he handed it to me a while back, he said here dad, everything you've ever wanted to know about the Navy is in here LOL!

I think there are better books to read, though I did learn that there are 9 types of anchors and that the Navy way of painting is known as "lay-on, lay-off"

Thanks Paul! Probably will not be on the top of the "must read" list!

while I have Eric's copy of the Blue Jackets Manual I find it pretty tedious......it's a textbook/manual and the material is presented that way and it's pretty superficial since it covers everything from pay to sexually transmitted diseases..... .....I've never really used it for anything except to browse through...

Paul I am really enjoying it at this point! Great book. Btw, I have the same US Navy garden flag! Very nice!

Question, is the Blue Jackets Manual beneficial to dads to read or this something really only targeted to sailors?

I just finished with this book, it's a great read!

Thanks Paul! It seems that will definitely be the case.
