Welcome to the NavyDads Media Center !

Share your recommendations for books and other media that you think would be of interest to other NavyDads.  I have numerous books I've read, and recently listened to via audiobook download, that generally concentrate on WWII Navy history that tell the recent combat history of the Navy and show where many current Navy doctrines and traditions have evolved from.  I find the stories compelling and make me even more proud to have a daughter that is a Navy veteran and a son on active duty and part of this long tradition of service.  Won't you share your recommendations as well?

Just started reading "A Salior's History of the U.S. Navy". It is going to be a great read!

On this Armed Forces Day, I thought I might talk about something our sailors live every day: HONOR. Those that follow this group know I listen to a ton of history books on my commute to and from work and I generally concentrate on volumes dealing with the Navy.  Today, I break that "rule" and want to talk briefly about something that happened in the skies of Germany in the waning days of WWII.  The concept of honor in combat seems mutually exclusive, yet time and time again we read about events that clearly show the concept of honor.    This book does that in spades:

Perhaps because of my German lineage this hits a little closer home than most, but any of you that value the concept of HONOR need to read this. An astounding story about some astounding men....truly the phase "the greatest generation" crosses lines drawn on a map and language.  Read a little about it: http://valorstudios.com/a-higher-call-book.htm

Dianne, your SR will be in my prayers! He will overcome this and will make it I am confident! Hope the books arrive soon and you enjoy them all! "No Easy Day" is another riveting book if you haven't already read it.

I can't wait until they get here.  Got notice this week that all 3 have shipped so I will be able to start reading soon. Would have just ordered the Kindle editions but my son loves to read also and this way I can share when I get through. I got a call from him tonight and he sounded so good!  Made my week! He has a stress fracture in his left heel and was quarantined over the weekend for bronchitis but he still sounded upbeat and positive. Love the support and all these websites to help pass the time.

I have Neptune's Inferno. Have not read it yet. Just started "Abandon Ship". This is the story of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. I live in the Indianapolis area where we have a memorial for it so this has particular significance.

Dianne, you will love The last stand of the tin can sailors! One of my favorites! I also just read "The Battle of Midway" by Craig Symonds. This was written in 2011. It is an EPIC!

This is a great site. Just ordered Battle Ready, Tin Can Sailors and Neptune's Inferno based on the recommendations on here. I read The Last Man by Vince Flynn last week and loved it. I like the detail in all of Vince Flynn's books. Also read No Easy Day and was interested in the difference in what the media covered and what the Seal said. Thanks so much for the tips, reading will help pass the time til I can see my SR again in June!
