Welcome to the NavyDads Media Center !

Share your recommendations for books and other media that you think would be of interest to other NavyDads.  I have numerous books I've read, and recently listened to via audiobook download, that generally concentrate on WWII Navy history that tell the recent combat history of the Navy and show where many current Navy doctrines and traditions have evolved from.  I find the stories compelling and make me even more proud to have a daughter that is a Navy veteran and a son on active duty and part of this long tradition of service.  Won't you share your recommendations as well?

Just finished reading Thomas E. Ricks' book entitled The Generals: American Military Command from World War II to Today--while it is primarily concerned with leadership in the US Army, much seems relevant to naval leadership, too. I have sent a copy to our LCDR son and will forward my own copy to our other Navy son recovering from BUD/S-related injury at Coronado.  I do not agree with all of Ricks' ideas or analyses, but it's an interesting and timely read. . . .

A good read is the novel THE PANTHER by Nelson DeMille. The protagonist John Corey is an irrepressible New York retired cop now working for the Joint Terrorist Task Force, fighting the battle against terrorism. And the villain in this book is very, VERY similar to Al Awlaki. Check it out.

I picked up a humongous coffee table book entitled THE NAVY, put out by the Naval Historical Foundation. I was walking into a Barnes & Noble in Yonkers, NY and there it was next to a collection of other coffee table breakers on the branches of the military. Of course I would pick this one up.

Besides being a good free weight for working out, it has great photos, and it tells the history of the Navy from 1775 to the present. It's a great narrative, and my wife uses it to keep me in line whenever she lifts it in my general direction...and it only cost 15 bucks. Is that the regular price? Dunno, but check out your nearest B&N to see if they carry it.

Listen to the following account.... Do you think President Obama is opening the files for Hollywood movie makers to tell this story? They won't even let the FBI look into it.

This is a story you will not read in the press, but let me give you some insight on actually what happened in Libya and trust me, this is factual.
The Embassy had a very small and undersized Marine attachment which was over run quickly with precise mortar attack by AL Qaeda, and the Marines had orders to use minimum force to protect our sovereign land. Now the story becomes interesting. Two Navy Seals who were in the area shot their way into the Embassy and herded up 30 of our Embassy workers and led them to safe ground. They then broke away from this thirty and started to defend themselves and their ammunition was limited. They held of the attacking forces till they ran out of ammunition. Two of our finest, then made themselves basically targets, as captives of Al Qaeda is not in the Navy Seal Dictionary. Thats all I will say about that, but here it is a sunny Sunday and grieving parents of "Two American Heroes" and of course the SEALS who griev
e also.
These were seasoned SEALS meaning they had near 15-20 years of training behind them. They are more valuable than all our military hardware put together.
We have lost in proportionally to many SEALS compared to other Special Forces and this should be alarming to the citizenery, and we must ask Why?
I will tell you, how about that.
Obama and his inept administration has taken a liking to the best warriors on this earth, and actually favor them on high value missions. Believe it or not, there are other "Special Forces" that many times might be more qualified or at least equally qualified for some of these missions. The Nany SEALS are being streched thin with this administration and Joint Chiefs and I wonder out loud on the Joint Chiefs that are very wise men, and are aware of such. Lets take a moment today to pray for these two men and the country that produces men who take the sancity of life so dearly, with surely knowing in this case they were about to die. I cannot imagine what they said to each other as the ammunition ran out, but I can tell you one thing, they met death honorably and I believe them both worthy of the "Medal of Honor" as these two Navy SEALS took honor to another level several days ago.

I really enjoyed the book. Didn't see anything that would compromise future missions, rather it was the voice of a frustrated former SEAL correcting the record, after the false narrative (and upcoming movie) that was concocted by the Whitehouse political machine that was supposed to give the President a boost in November. This book likely forced a rewrite.

Paul I babied reading this book and I only have a few more pages to go. My take on this whole thing is, that it's one of those borderline legally okay per his legal team with regards to OPSEC but could also be taken and viewed as morally wrong to write about by fellow SEALS and others in the community...

But dam this was well written. His story made me feel like I was there with him and the whole DEVGRU team throughout the journey...

Robert's Ridge: an incredible few hours on the mountain top.  Before reading...well...listening....I would have said the battle was a giant "cluster f...".  Now though, I understand much better when someone says "the fog of war".......
