I was wandering as a father of a prospective nuke. Do they leave for A school the day after PIR or the same day generally.
I think they have to do indoc before they class up but it has been 2 yrs since my son began there so it very well could have changed. We spent most of the day on Saturday at the airport with my son in the USO, he was still in dress whites and pretty anxious to get on his way but he had a very long wait for his flight. We went to one of the restaurants at the airport and had a meal together, and just hung out at the USO. Once he arrived at Goose Creek, I was able to visit on weekends since I live in SC and the drive is not very far for me. As he "phased up" to be able to wear civilian clothes, have his car there etc. I was able to bring those things to him. But they can have their electronics at the airport.
My son said he heard they had enough incoming to start the new class in Goose Creek on Monday after PIR.
Just tolet you know, the navy does things the navys way. The duty station your sons are attached to is wanting to pass them on to the next duty station so they are free of the responsibleity. If you are able to see your sons you can spend time with them at the UFO at the air port also this is a time when your sons can be given a phone to comunicate with you in the future. Remind them NO RECORDING DEVICES ALLOWED IN NIMITZ study hall. My son had to wait three weeks for his class to start due to the needs of the navy. My son was assigned watch at different duty stations also as long as your sons are doing well they may have weekend liberty like my son did. They will have to request a chit but my son was able to go to orlando durring power school on one of the weekends. Remind them no underage drinking and do not even be around anyone underage that is drinking. You can call the UFO to get more details about spending time with your sailor. Good luck to your sons and a shipmate in need is a shipmate indeed. A large % dont make it thru power school and prototype. My son made it to the fleet. The best thing that can happen between power school and prototype is taking college courses depending on if your sailor does or does not need a mental break. They have to take in a lot.
My son said in a letter that he would be flying out on Saturday but we haven't been able to get a time. Hopefully we'll get aletter or call before we leave so we can adjust our plans.
And yes, "challenging" may be an understatement.
Hi Mike
I'm sure our sons will run into each when they ship out. Do you have an idea how soon your son leaves after PIR? I thought it was usually the day after.
My son's PIR is 4/27 and he will be headed for Goose Creek right after.
He will be a MM. Sounds like Nuke school will be very challenging.
Thanks. Of course I always worry whether he'll make it through the program, but it's his show now. I know he's smart enough.
So far, he's excelled in Boot Camp, so he's pretty motivated. A-school will be one day at a time, just like everything else.
be proud of him, he's done real good so far.
A-school will be a few months -- difficult but not real stressful.
Power school is the next really hard part -- but the washout rate is only about 25% or so -- so keep up the support, ask for any help you need, and support your Sailor.
Eventually, your kid -- won't be a kid any more will be a totally competent Nuke - your totally transformed offspring - will be serving in the fleet -- with super skills and responsibilities.
That's how it goes with the NAVY nuclear program.
Me - totally amazed how my daughter toughed her way through the nuke program and now stands watches and makes the ship move "over there"
