@Eric..... Never heard of that. There is a program like that thought for like Thanksgiving an XMAS where families will volunteer to host military people for dinner and what not

Just a question from a father of a future Nuke, I hear there are families that like taking in Sailors during the weekend (if earned) out at Goose Creek. Kind of like an adopt a Sailor thing. Is this true?

Now this was nearly two years ago so some things may have changed but first and foremost the sailor needs to request to be able to take classes during the hold time, the hold time needs to be long enough, they need to be academically ranked high in their class(my sailor graduated with distinction), and then there needs to be room in the classes offered(there are limits on class sizes).  Other than that, as we all know, the Navy does things their own way and we are often left scratching our heads as to how that is.  Sorry I don't know any more than what happened to my sailor back then and things could be different today.

Mike K, what does a sailor have to do to take outside classes during that layover between NPS and Prototype?  He still has a couple months left but seems to be doing pretty well on tests, etc. so I am just trying to get a feel for things.

My sailor was able to take two college classes between Power School and Prototype while in GC.  He graduated Power School mid May and didn't start Prototype until early August so the length of time may have had something to do with it.

It has been about 3 years but yeah -- A school not much wait and Power school not a lot more.  Back then there was a prototype off line and they had to wait a few months for that -- they got some nondescript college classes while waiting.

Hurry up and wait is SOP.

Also want to say -- I've met some of my daughters classmates and some other nukes in the fleet since Power School grad ceremony -- they are real competent reliable decent people -- bless them all.

A schools start nearly every week or so thus she should not have to wait a very long time after she arrives at GC.  Power school and prototype start every six weeks or so thus often times sailors wait a couple of months between those schools.

OK have a question. If EM school at Goose Creek started 3 days ago and my daughter is graduating from BT April 6th, how long is she going to have to wait for next EM school? Hoping someone has experience in this and can answer my question. Thank You

Bonus is calculated as follows:

base pay x multiple x years added on contract

multiple differs between rates and sub/surface

years added is not the amount of years you reenlist for. it is the time added onto your contract. a nukes contract is actually 4 years with a 2 year extension(which actually doesnt have to be accepted but we wont get into that). if you reenlist between you hit 4 years and get into the extension those two years are dropped and count in the bonus calculation. so say an e4 making  2000 base pay reenlisting at their 2 year point for 6 years, the extension would get dropped so they would have 4 years count towards the bonus. yes you get half up front and the rest in installments(usually 3 or 4) every october.

@William yes you are correct. there are few times where they will send someone who is a sub vol to a carrier. it all depends on the manning for carrier vs sub at the time.

Thanks Craig.  My son is a sub volunteer but he will not find out if he gets that until the end of prototype, I think.
