That formula looks about right. If you reup during deployment in a combat zone (receiving combat pay) the bonus is tax free. Many of the M department's nukes did that when the USS Ronald Reagan was deployed last year in the Arabian Gulf.

I don't know where the "2" is coming from, but here's the formula.

(Monthly Base Pay) X (Years of Additional Service) X (The SRB multiplier)

One example, E-4 with 4 years in $2266 X 4 years X 9 = $81576.  I have heard these bonuses are taxed and paid out over the years that are added on.

My sailor came home for 12 days. Spent most of his time with friends but we got some quality time too. He is an SPU and is looking foreword to 2 years in BS. He and 2 other friends rented a house north of Saratoga Springs. Their BAH more than covers their expenses. There is a shopping mall in the area

( http://www.wiltonmall.com/ ) so shopping is convenient.

He is a sub vol and is receiving sub pay as an E-4. He still has to do the paperwork to get his E-5 and reenlistment bonus. The bonus formula is 2 times annual pay times years in the Navy times 9. The 9 is the "multiplyer" the Navy assigns based on how vital your classification is to the Navy (If you are, say, a deckhand, the Navy probably has plenty of those and wouldn't care if you reenlisted, and would assign a multiplyer of 1). The maximum bonus is either $80K or $90K. depending on who you believe (Can anyone offer some clarification on this?). They get half now and half later, I forget when that is.

As an instructor he is assigned 2 students. That could increase to 4. The major problem students have is forgetting basic information they learned in A school and the beginning of power school. Especially the ones who were on hold for a long time. He doesn't mind the long days and puts in extra hours to keep up with paperwork and earn some more quals but he looks foreword to his days off.

He figures that when he goes to fleet in 2 years he will be too busy doing quals to take any leave. He wants to take enough leave before then to be negative before then. He can be negative when he goes to fleet but once there, he can't take leave until he is positive.

If you think any of the above information is incorrect, please feel free to disagree.

My son who is an ET3 is graduating nuclear power school tomorrow with Class 1107 and will be home on leave starting tomorrow night.  He graduated in the top 1/3 of the class which was his goal for NPS.  3 seems to be the magic number in the nuclear pipeline there is 3 of everything LOL.

The ceremonies are a big deal, especially Power School. Good to hear there is now a Proto ceremony for grads and parents.

But what totally amazes me how, 2 years after proto, my daughter is a totally competent Nuke, on her second deployment, responsible for whatever she does (classified) and relied on by her shipmates and officers.  Wow. Our kids become really serious reliable people in a few short years.

I'm totally amazed -- and pleased -- .

Kris -- yeah I've been to many church basement lutefisk dinners in MN and ND.

How such landlocked kids become totally competent sailors -- duh!

Amazed.

regarding worhsip services...not sure if there are many midwestern/scandanavian/lutheran/ELCA parents on here but those services are rare on any bases. son went to chapel at BC but it was missouri synod which if your lutheran you know the difference-lol.

I'd say in the Nuke pipeline the most impressive ceremony is Power School.

they joke about nukes being nerds but mines kind of the opposite, 6ft, 200lbs, not a gamer but very OCD.

Dangerous situations? hehe never had any of those on deployment making circles under the water. Unless of course you consider running low on any decent food and having to eat even worse crap every meal =D.

my son graduated prototype last month and there is a ceremony, it is a quick one, but family and friends can attend. They wore dress blues and top Sailors from each crew get an award, as well as the highest GPA.

I was lucky. I was able to take my son on a cruse at Christmas, right after his graduation from Prototype we went to Jamaca, grand camon and cozemel. My son ask me to hold onto some things for him after his graduation. One of the things he ask me to hold onto was a picture of his graduation prototype class. My son told me he took more pride in being in that picture than any other picture he has been in. I told my son he should be proud of this completeing this, that not everyone could do this. My son is curently serving on the CVN72 we do not talk about any of the ships movements. My son is proud to serve on a quarter mile of the US. I told my son he owes me one after the Christmas cruse, he will be sponsering me on the Lincon when a Tiger is avalable, I will be there. We can all be proud of our sailors, they are the best of the best.
