William- the oxygen level on a submarine is closely monitored by a central atmosphere monitoring system and controlled by bleeding oxygen from high pressure Oxygen banks into the ship's atmosphere.  I never had a problem with headaches or lethargy.  About the only problem I ever had with the environment was dry skin, due to very low humidity.

Does the reduced oxygen level on subs give you headaches or make you lethargic, or anything like that?   Thanks.

Hi all.  I am a retired Nuke EMCS(SS) (Senior Chief Electrician's Mate Submariner), and my son is currently a EM2(SS) onboard a ballistic missile submarine.  Feel free to ask me any questions about the program or life aboard a boat.  I've served on 5 different classes, both SSN and SSBN.  Always willing to help a fellow Navy Dad.

Some helpful things for Boot if he will be there for a while, A phone card if you can get it to him is a must. The call from my son after he finished the DC trainer was one of the greatest still sends chills down my back remembering it, they do get a phone card given to them but it is short. also don't forget to have the DVD of PIR you will want that my son was in the 919 so they were putting on the performance my son was in the honor guard. As for your son not writing don't feel bad about that one, they get VERY LITTLE down time to write mostly just sunday for a couple of hours. But what ever it takes you want to hear your son say he is now a sailor. They don't get to call there selves sailors until after they have proven they can perform in the DC trainer. (You can do a search and find a video about the damage control trainer) Up until that time they wear a cap that says recruit after the DC trainer they get a cap that says NAVY. Some helpful things for the future you can order and have your son some crows from vanguard. Making friends in the right places is always good just like in the civilian world. In my unit I had the duty of training petty officer and at different times also operations petty officer. Training petty officer I had to make sure our unit had enough trained people in each area, I got to have some good training in different areas.  operations petty officer meant I had to assign job duties it was a pain I could sure make some friends or some enemies fast. Also see if you can find a video on the Forestal, you will get a great understanding of why everyone in the navy is a firefighter.

We are not going to the PIR so we have to ship the phone. TFJ nuke dad that is good advice I did not think about last minute snags I will ask him to call from the airport before he gets on the plane then I can ship it. Thanks I never would have thought of that. I wrote my son who is too busy at boot camp to write dear old Dad and said write me a list of what else you want mailed or I will just take a wild guess.

Proud dad - we had the same situation with our son. The day of graduation we went to dinner, best buy- where he bought himself a very nice electric razor, Starbucks, then back to our room to hang out and wear his sweats. Later he redressed and we took him to dinner. He wasn't sure when he had to return because of a the excitement, he just forgot. We dropped him off at 7p and found out the next day he didn't have to be back till 9p. Be he was pretty nervous about being late. I was impressed. The next morning at 4a he was calling to have us meet him at the airport. I packed his laptop bag with cell, laptop and other items that he could just carry on the plan. They also let us go through security with proper I'D. We had breakfast, played card and layed around till departure. When he left for GC we went into Chicago and did some site seeing.
It was a fast trip but we wouldn't have missed it for the world.

I was at my sons grad N go from boot. It looks like Great Lakes was wanting to get the nukes to the next command as soon as they graduate, my son had to stand watch off and on for about two weeks while he was waiting for the next class to start. For those of you that haven't gone thru it yet you can meet your sailor at the USO, then your sailor can take you thru TSA security and you can spend a little more time with them at the gate. My son spent ten hours at the air port. I knew about the phone and once they leave Great Lakes they can have the phone if the next command allows phones, I gave my son his phone at the USO. It was kind of cool my son said Dad I have money now I can pay for my own things. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Also your sailor can help the recruiter were they sighed on and get a few extra days on there first leave that don't count against leave time.

Hi guys.

my daughter is at CG, she was grad and go from boot camp had a total of six hours at the airport, she went straight through A school then was on T track until today when she started power School, so since April 2010 had just about seen her for 5 days over christmas its hard when it gets like this, but you learn to get through it

When my son went down, I too sent everything via UPS.  It was delivered to GC in 2 days but it took my son 2 days afterwards to get it.  The enormous amount of packages and mail they received usually takes about 2 -3 days before they notify the sailor that a package has arrived.
