Hey Jim B, our sons must be in the same class as our son graduates in January also. As I mentioned earlier, he had a four day weekend and we went for a visit. Training time is getting short and he can not wait for it to be over. As you said the workload is demanding and all these sailors deserve our utmost support and respect.
John, congratulations, a great honor to be sure.

Got some great news from my son today. He had just received a text from his LPO that he was chosen as Junior Sailor of the year for his unit.

We just returned from a quick four day visit with our son in GC and had a great time. As I mentioned earlier, he is on track to take comps next week and his boards before Christmas, graduating in January. Like others he is waiting for orders as to where he will go next. He also has signed up for subs and hopes he gets on one. He is an EM and says however that there is no extra schooling for sub training for EMs or ETs, they go straight to their assigned boats after leave. Just thought I would pass that on.
Steven S, you will not be sorry you attended Power School graduation. We went and it was a great ceremony. It was wonderful to see these sailors as they progressed one more rung of the ladder of a very long and grueling training schedule.

Thank you for all the comments. We are planning on going for power school graduation and really have no idea how to plan. I guess we will be flexible and open you going home early if son and wife have to get up to NY. That would be too bad. Reminds me of BC grad n go. Oh well, either way it will be great to see them.

Thanks all.

Although my son has been listed as a submariner since he left boot, he has repeatedly told me that it is not a guarantee. It all depends on where the need is for his particular field (MM). In addition, he said that MM do not receive special submarine training as their jobs are interchangable whether it be above or below the surface. Only the EM's and ET's go on to submariner training which is only a few more weeks. Best advice I can give you is something that is always repeated here. "The Navy does what the Navy wants to do!" Get used to that and all will fall into place. Don't count on anything until it comes through. I have seen plans change repeatedly. My son has received orders only to have them changed less than 1 hour later.

My son is in prototype and scheduled to graduate in early Jan - he has chosen subs, but has not gotten confirmation on being on a sub or on a carrier yet. He has also requested his duty station, but has not heard about that either. Prototype they get certified and then they get checked out on the ship they are assigned when they arrive there

My son in shipping out to boot camp in 4 weeks and I had a few questions for other nuke dads.

At what point during boot camp do the nuke candidates get selected as either MM, EM or ET?

Also, since they do not attend submarine school, when do the nukes who volunteer for subs learn how to use the emergency equipment, etc. that sub school teaches? Finally, when do they actually get selected for submarines, is it after A school, NPS or prototype. Thanks.

My son is an MM and left Goose Creek the same day as graduation. He said it all depends on when things open up at prototype. He had to be out of his room at Goose Creek the morning of graduation and had to be at NY 2 days later. They only allowed him to drive 8 hours a day and the trip is about 15. Luckily he took some leave and he had a few extra days to report at NY. Some of his other classmates were on hold at Goose Creek between 2 - 4 months.
