Donniec, we all have gone through this before, so don't worry about it. That is one of the nice things about this site, questions get answered and people are always willing to help out. My son is an EM too, waiting for prototype to start up hopefully in July or August. I hear that the reactor at GC is now up and functioning again so that is good news and maybe the holds won't be as long as feared.

Thanks for the help, I talked to my son today he is an EM. It looks like we both have a lot to learn.

MaryK13 is absolutely right. Being a Petty Officer means that you are qualified to be in a supervisory position and take on more responsibility besides having that extra training. In the military, certain jobs require certain ranks as well and those who do not hold the proper rank can not hold those jobs unless promoted. As she said also, their nuke training is very desirable outside the service. They also accrue substantial educational benefits they can use when they leave the service.

I have a lot of friends who didn't really understand how the chain worked. Unlike the business world, if you start out enlisted, you stay enlisted unless you choose to go through the qualification process to become an officer. When they finish A school the do become Petty OFFICERS, but it's not the same as being an "Officer" in the Navy.
If your son decides to get out of the Navy, his Nuke training is very desirable in the private sector.

As David's Mom said, they are assigned their rates and that is where they stay. They do cross train in the other two rates so they do get some experience in all three. Officer school is a possibility providing they have the scores and the desire and are willing to put in the time.

and then can they move up the officers rank if they choose

Thanks Mike, This may sound like a strange question, but are those the only first steps? Its seems there are many different avenues in which one can work in a the nuke field, for the Navy. If you start as an MM can you then go on to a different area in the nuclear field. Or are you stuck with that area for your career. Thanks, don

Donniec, if he hasn't picked a nuke rating to become(EM, MM, or ET) yet, he will when he first arrives in GC. They need to know which rate they will be as A schools are slightly different for each rating with EMs and ETs being 24 weeks and MMs being approximately 12 weeks. Upon completion of A school they officially become that rate and are promoted to Petty Officer 3rd class for graduation.
