Mike - we are in the southwest suburbs ......... my son is an MM as well - he said that if he stayed at GC there would be a linger hold, but if he goes to BS there MAY be a shoter hold...... as you said the Navy will do what they need to do to fill the slots in t he fleet. I am guessing ALL branches are that way - I was in the Army as well.....filled out my wish list coming back from everseas and did not get any of them...wound up working with the "aggressor" forces for the Rangers and then wokred with the Ranger Training Division for a little while .......... never expected that one!!

No, it is the regular 4.0 scale according to what my sailor has said. To graduate with honors they need a cumulative 3.6. Tests as I understand it are all over the place as far as point values, some under 100 points while others are near 200, depending on subject and depth of knowledge they expect. Most areas of study have at least two tests, some three but I am not sure if any area requires more than three.

My question is: Does GC grad on a 4.0 or some exotic Navy grad point scale?

Jeff B, if you don't mind, where in the Chicago area are you from? We are in the western suburbs. Our sailor graduates on May 14th which we will be attending. He has requested GC and is tentatively set to stay there. We talked to him last night and he said that mechanics will have longer holds, some may be at least 6 to 8 months long, or so he was told. Electricians are in demand and will have shorter holds, again, so he was told. What you said about class rank also is true we hear, but the Navy will do whatever they wish. He knows a married sailor whose wife is in GC and wanted to stay there for obvious reasons, yet they have now decided to ship him to BS. I guess you never know until it happens. Reminds me too much of the Army which was my branch.

My son requested BS as well - I agree weather, but my son wants to see other parts of the country so........I guess that works - we live in the Chicago area so he knows about the cold and snow, but he likes the winter sports. He said that class rank may play a part in the decision as well.......hope they find out - he wants me to drive with him after graduation so it would be nice to know.

My son choose BS over SC, (not my first choice because of weather, LOL!). His rank is PO3 and since we live within 400 miles of BS, that allowed him to have additional leverage when making his decision., or so he was told. It will be only a 3 1/2 hr drive as opposed to a 13 hour drive from home. He too was told 2 month wait until classes start.

Mike. He was told he has 14 days to report. He doesn't want to use up too much of his leave though.

I guess we are in the same boat GP. My son graduates power school 5/14 also. He told us somewhat the same as I am reading here though where he is going after grad. is not definite. He wants NY. He told us he has 2 weeks leave after grad. and then will be on hold for 2 mths. He is also an EM. He didn't mention GPA but he is always modest. He also mentioned a significant bonus comes with graduation?

The way we understand it is that the sailors may express their choice, it is up to the Senior Chiefs, and of course the needs of the Navy as to where they go. GPA our sailor says has something to do with it also, the better the GPA the more they will take that choice into consideration. Our sailor has a pretty high GPA, expressed a wish to remain in Charleston and has been told as of now that is what he will be doing after he graduates on May 14th. He was also told he would have a 2 month hold before he starts prototype. He is an EM and rates also have something to do with all this.
