We visited our sailor over the July 4th weekend last summer. There are many nice motels within 15-20 minutes of the base off the interstate. The motels near base do look a bit questionable.

A while back someone asked about billeting at GC. I am here now and the base does have on base Villas but they fill up quickly. They are available to reserve 90 days in advance the number to reserve them is (843)-764-2120 good luck when I asked yesterday 3/12/2010 they were booked through the whole month of March. Local hotels did not look all that great hotels looked nice but i would be afraid to leave at night. We are staying on University Ave aabout 10 minutes from the base where we can meet out son. They Air Base billeting is closed unless you are going to Afgan. How long this restriction will last is unknown.

Thank you for all of the feedback. He is working with credible credit counseling company to pay back his creditors. I know that recruiters will sugar coat things and that's why I wanted to get feedback from people who were in a similar situation or know/knew someone in a similar situation. Again, thank you for your feedback and good luck to your sons/daughters while in school and serving after school.

A sailor that went through boot camp with mine and then on to GC has had trouble with the clearance. He owed money and had questionable credit. As I understand it, they can go through A school without the clearance but can not start Power School without it. This friend's clearance did not come through and he has been on T track since October waiting. My sailor said the clearance finally did come through and he will class up with the next Power School class but it took many months. How your son's credit and loan situation will play out is anyone's guess and the Navy is the Navy and who knows what they will do. I don't mean to sound negative but recruiters will tell recruits just about anything but it sounds like from my sailors friend's experience, they try to work things out.

George:
I don't know how the bad credit will affect your son's chances of Nuke school, but also be aware that the navy may do a background check on your family as well. Good luck to your son. I hope all works out well. Thank him for his service.

Hi,

I'm new to the group and trying to learn what to expect when my son ships in October. My son decided to join the Navy because there are very few jobs in the civilian sector and signed his contract to become a nuke. I have read in various blogs, forums, and websites that this program is very exclusive and demanding. I don't doubt my future sailor's commitment or his abilities to succeed, however, I have also read that a security clearance is needed and he has bad credit (a couple outstanding loans and late payments). The recruiter has told him that he will be fine, but I have also read that while at Great Lakes they run the sailor's background and credit checks to ensure they can obtain a security clearance and can deny entrance into the program if something comes back that doesn't fall into line with their standards. I know that he is really excited about the opportunity, however, if anyone knows anything about passing the security clearance qualifications please give me details.

According to my sailor, the wait time for prototype for MMs will be the longest, could be over 6 months, ETs next, with EMs possibly going to prototype nearly right out of Power School. The fleet is drastically short of EMs he says. He also said that prototype school at GC will slow down as maint. issues hit that facility as they did NY.

Joe and Jeff..... Looks like are sailors might all be in the same class. The NY prototype facility was the main reason my son was told there was a delay. Not I'm not really sure why the extended delay. I hope it's not 10 months.

the power school graduationat at Goose Creek is smaller than the one at GL but it was nice, and just as formal. It was a nice area to visit, and it gives you a chance to see your son or daughter before they go into prototype.
