Hope it was nothing serious with your son. Also hope he learned a valuable lesson. It's all part of the maturation process.

That explains it, thanks guys. My son got in trouble so is doing an extra 20 hours this week so hasn't answered my Email although he tried to call and I missed him last night. He only had a few months between signing and Boot Camp.

Yeah, I didn't count in the reserve years. Like yours, my son signed up at the end of May 2008 and went in early Feb of this year and as you said, that time in DEP applies to the reserve component years. Not a bad deal when you think about it.

The 8 years is broken down into 6 years active and 2 years reserve. (In active but can be recalled in the event of a National emergency). Any time spent from the day your son signed his papers to the day boot camp started went towards his inactive requirement. For example, my son signed on July 7, 2008 but did not report to boot until April 27, 2009. That period counts towards his 2 years.

Wow! I hope I am wrong. He really kept me out of the loop at the time, but I will double check with him about the 8 years. Thanks for the explanations Mike. I think my son is an EM also. I will check that also. So many acronyms!

Sheryl, are you sure your son is in for 8 years? Our son is in for 6 and that is the standard enlistment for nukes as we understand it. 2 years of training and 4 years in the fleet. As for MM's, they are machinist mates and work on the mechanical systems, the EM's or electricians mates work on the electrical systems(my son), while the ET's manage the functioning of the equipment. That is it briefly as I understand it. Power and Prototype schools are both around 20-24 weeks in length.

Thanks! That is why my son wasn't sure if the delay was bad or good, since he has to stay the same amount of time it makes no difference, unless he finds he likes his future job better than doing what they do to stall until school starts again.
What is a MM? So power and prototype last how long? When did he start Prototype? How hard was Power school? Any tips after "A" school?

Good for him!!! My son is Team Leader in A school right now, even though he is the youngest. I am sure he will be fine too!

I am sure that all of them at this point still do NOT love it, but they will adapt to it and be fine.....I hated the Army for quite a while, but adapted to it and figured out how to play the game....they will too.......you are correct - they do have a pretty good method to tell if they can make it or not - so they all have the ability - now they need to show that........my son said that he is figuring it out and liking it more. He has applied to the academy and has sent his application in. He graduated with honors from A school and was able to have lunch with the Commander and spoke to him about it. The Commander will give him a recommendation so - we shall see what happens.........

He signed up and wouldn't let me even discuss it before he signed. The only thing I could get in was "get it in writing", he wouldn't believe the Recruiter was NOT his Friend! Now he knows that. But I will let him learn his lessons and try to keep my concerns to myself, it only pushes them farther into things (like the sleeve he get a couple of weeks ago!). I just want him to be happy. I just hope he really does like it, because at 19, 8 years is a long time. He seems okay with it, but not loving it for sure. He does miss San Diego, home, family and friends a lot I know that much and I feel for him. But he is WAY ahead of all his friends still here. I guess I will make it too!! I encouraged him to do this and still feel it is the best thing. How hard the school is is my worry. I know the Navy picked him and trusted him and so should I!
