Your Sailor will learn how to study the "Navy" way and as long as he/she will stick to it and not buck the "Navy" way then success is fairly certain. Put in the hours studying after class and on weekends, afterall, it is their job, that's why they are there. Family support and encouragement also plays a huge factor. Speak and guide in the "affirmative" when communicating. I coached ball for years and found instructing with what I wanted the athletes to do instead of what I didn't want them to do or what they were doing incorrectly put the right thought in their heads. For instance, "stay down on the groundball" was better then "don't lift your head or glove on the groundball" or "don't drift to the flyball" wasn't as good as saying "beat the ball to the spot and get behind it". I think you get the idea, anyway, keep things in the positive and affirmitive so that their subconscience goes in the right direction. My wife and I also send a "care package" every couple weeks packed with everyday stuff as well as things from our home area and a surprise or two. It gives our Sailor something to look forward to as well as a little reward after grinding out coutnless hours studying. One last thing, do your best to answer the phone call when it comes in. They obviously want to talk and have something to say so do your best to give them an ear and voice on the other end instead of voicemail. Hope this helps, Ron, and best of luck to your Sailor and family.
The time between graduation from Power School and assignment to a Prototype class is called "Hold" Sailors in hold are given many assignments to various parts of the command during this time. It is a great time for the students to relax and enjoy the area. Of course it is also a time for them to get into bad situations but if they made it this far they know better (We hope)
@Rocco, do you know how long before his power school starts? My son is telling me he grad's this Friday but power school doesn't start until Nov 5th. I know from personnel experience that an idle sailor is not always a productive sailor.
Our sailor just got to Goose Creek this pasts Saturday after PIR on friday, so we're brand spanking new to all of this.
Our son graduated A school August 7th and it's pretty low key compared to PIR at boot camp. If you get there by 8:30 am you should have plenty of time to park and walk to the hall. They give you plenty of photo ops in side the hall. Plenty to see and do all around Charleston. Your sailor probably already knows the good places to eat and visit! Have fun and congrats.
Ron, will do, pictures, video, time, date and place. I’ve been to the school house for a visit over the July 4th weekend; it’s a beautiful and well run place. Charleston is a short ride from the base and a really nice place, lots to do, to see. I know where the grad takes place, just working the best time to get in place. I’m a Navy retiree so access and navigating the base is a breeze. I believe if your sailor screened to get in they will succeed. If they have already started they should have a solid idea as to their grad date. My son tells me his buddy’s difficulties where just learning how to study, what to make a priority. Don’t get behind & ALWAYS ask for help. They don’t want anyone to fail, their teaching the folks who will be working for them in the fleet.
Mike, post as much detail about A school graduation as you can during and after you get back for the rest of us "if" our sailor makes it that far! Tips for attending, things we need to know for before, during and after (I assume there is no live broadcast like there is for PIR). Like can we video tape the event to show other family member's later. That's just one topic. How often do they have A school graduation?
I'm heading down to Charleston for this Fridays "A" graduation. I'm told it starts at 0900, what time is best to get to the base?
