@Cody. My son is starting week 3 of MM "A" school and I can tell you he is extremely busy. Last Sunday he said they all had mandatory study with many in class for most of the day. He has many early mornings and late nights so when Friday evening roles around him and some buddies just hang out on the base and unwind. He is usually in his rack between 2200 and 2300 so he can get a few extra hours of sleep. Saturday comes and goes quickly with plenty of "I" dotting and "T" crossing. Sunday more mandatory study (the night/day before a class day there is mandatory study). I am not sure what rate your girl is but MM is 13 weeks. The volume of material they receive is daunting. If you can handle it let her get through "A" school, she will have 10 days with no thoughts or worries to spend with you. JMO.
@Cody, after A school and before power school there likely will be a gap of time. My son is looking @ close to 8 weeks, he grads 8/28 and has been told power school will not start until very late Oct and he will be granted up to 10 days leave during that down time.
Cody, A school is very demanding! Talk with her, my son spent many Friday nights relaxing from the week of classes with a beer, & movies with roommates. Saturday was there fun day, a day to explore Charleston, mostly the College of Charleston, or catch a baseball game . Sunday its back to studying for the up coming week. Or in some cases catching up on mandatory study hours. How far away are you?
I just returned from a great visit to Goose Creek, our son is 7 or so weeks from completing EM “A” school and loving every bit of Charleston. Patriots Point, Ft Sumter, the “Joe”, and the food on King St, there something for everyone. He says the classes are tough and you had better not get behind, but likes the challenge, he’s also a bit of a gym rat so PT is a breeze. The base is spotless, the sailors are polite & professional, and it’s clearly a reflection of the command leadership. Nothing like Millington TN, where I attended” A” school or Pensacola, where most aviation rates study, or Norfolk Naval Base, where I work now. I had a long drive, but my visiting advice, talk with your kid, and ask about mandatory study hours, watches, and their plans for the weekend. Then go visit, if possible, you do want to be part of this.
Ron, I'm not an authoritative source, but that is outside the 75mi liberty radius. All that means is that she would have to get permission, referred to as a "chit". That is possible, but I would not recommend it. That is a lot of travel time, too many ifs, and she will very likely have study hours or otherwise have to be back early on Monday. It is a much better plan to go down there and enjoy a long weekend in the lovely Charleston area.
