Also another general question for anyone. Our recruit called yesterday and said they want her to sign up for Machinist Mate in the Nuke program because they "need" more of those. This girl is small, with very little arm muscle. From what I read, the Machinst Mates are the brute strength of the Nuke program. How would they expect her to lift heavy pipes and all that? I under stand the need is primary for the Navy, but matching skills with that need would seem important too. She's more the brain instead of the brawn type. Not saying she might not actually get to where she could do 80% of it, but not sure about the last 20% in certain situations. Or have I been watching too many movies and seeing those big muscle guys working in the engine rooms with huge pipe wrenches?
Luke, you mentioned on Labor Day our A school sailor has 3 day liberty. Just to be clear, would that allow her to come home for three days (5 hours a way) or does that mean that we would need to visit her in Charleston for those three days? When they're on liberty, how far can they go away from the school I guess is what I'm asking vs being on "leave".
Like my Air Force 30-year Auntie used to say
"Noli perspirare!"
Don't sweat it.
Get the gate pass from your kid.
All the locals know when Power School grad happens, they make a lot of money by it, and they will all be happy to help.
Do not sweat it. You got the pass, zero worries.
There will be some kinda admiral handing out the certificates.
Hoping that in July, the grads can be in dress whites - in Feb, 70 degrees they wore blues.
Please speak your kid's section Chief after the ceremony, if you can.
And please do not heap praises on the Power School grads - they know that Proto is ahead of them. Feed your Nuke, but never presume to have a clue about what they've done, because, Navy Dad, you will never again have a tiny clue about what your son or daughter knows and can do. They got so far ahead of what you or I know -- yeah.
Thanks Ric!
Your son will e-mail you the gate pass for the graduation ceremony.
The entrance to the base for Power School graduation is on Red Bank Road. Just follow the crowd, show your pass, no worries. Be early.
I confess, I got disoriented between CHS airport and the Goose Creek base, but Google maps and local help got me there in good time.
Congrats and BZ -- you will be there, bless you, and bless all the new Nukes.
Rocco,
Thanks, really appreciate it.
Heading to Goose Creek this weekend for a visit I will see if I can get some info for you!
My son graduates from power school next Friday (7/10) and my son had made us reservation at the lodge on the air base by the airport.
Does someone know where the graduation is and what gate to go to? Does my son need to notify them we are coming, etc.?
TIA,
Charlie
@Ron, don't even think about Aug 1st, but if it is a short drive, odds are good that you could meet that Sunday and go out for the day. No problem going shopping or into Charleston, but she would have to be in uniform. After that, there usually won't be a problem visiting on weekends. For Labor Day weekend she should have 3 days liberty.
There are no visiting policies, just liberty policies. You will meet her at the Mini-NEX on Fletcher. The only time you will go on the school grounds is for graduations, and then not past the torpedoes.
@Ron, They have lots of indoc to go through, so wait. 3 Phases. It's better to wait till at least 2nd if not 3rd phase so they earn the ability to wear civilian clothes and right to get off base.
