Would be nice to keep the discussion here as my son graduates RTC on June 13th and would like to know the same information.  Sounds like I have a lot to learn as his career in Nukes is just about ready to begin...

Joe M - eventually I'll be interested in your discussion on the transition from training to first base.  I would say either a new group on this site or if you want to keep it nuke related then perhaps a discussion above?

Same goes for the STAR re-enlistment.  Our son is only 6 weeks into proto but he has talked to us about this.  I know he mentioned that they recently had some type of class/meeting with a career counselor and they discussed STAR.  Hopefully someone whose sailor has been through this already will chime in.  I believe that William on here has knowledge of that.....I know he has mentioned it on the nuke mom's site in the past.

Never to early to start gathering info IMO!

Is anyone aware of any discussions re: the transition from training to their first assigned base?  A group on this site maybe?  I'm wanting to discuss info the logistics of moving.  Mine still has a lot of stuff stored here at home.  I'm researching on the web, but it would be helpful to talk to other folks firsthand.

Also seeking discussion on the STAR re-enlistment process.

KenH, Sounds like we're in the same boat re: leave.   According to my son there's some scuttlebutt they'll be at GC another week or 2 after graduation, a very unclear situation.  His report date is Jul 2 at Kings Bay, so he's eager to be freed up.  Kid's been shortchanged on leave opportunities IMO.  He's been home ~10 days over the last 26 months.

B'sNuke, Thanks!  I'm so ready for this to be over.  My anxiety levels have probably been higher than his over the course of it.

Good luck, mlongst. I'm sure he'll do fine. We all felt the same anxiety. I think Mike and Derek were in boot camp together.
Thanks, Joe M. My son does graduate on 6/6 at GC. He had to repeat a lot of checkouts as well; don't know how many.

Still waiting to hear when his leave starts. I'm going to help him drive his car back to Chicago.

Ken and Joe - congrats to your Sailors!  BZ to them!

mlongst - best of luck to your son tonight with his boards!

Mine was given a date of 6/9 to go "on-crew" and they take their "off-crew" exam on Thursday.  Just hoping that everything keeps moving along ok.

mlongst,  Best of luck to Mike.  I know exactly how you're feeling.  The finish line is so close now.  I'm sure he will do well.

KenH, Congrats!  I wonder if my son and yours graduate together (June 6, GC)?  Mine passed his boards a couple weeks ago as well.  As you say, it has been a LONG ride starting back in Apr 2012.   Proto has been especially trying due to the instructor scandal.  He had ~60 checkouts invalidated.

KenH,   congratulations to your son.  It has been a long haul.  Mike takes his boards tonight.  Fingers crossed but he should do fine.

My son finished his proto boards a couple weeks ago, still a couple of weeks till graduation. Then he finally gets some leave, and on to CVN-70. I'm so proud and relieved. He started boot camp 27 months ago. It was a long ride.
Very best of luck to your sailors, and enjoy the weekend, mindful of what Memorial Day is about.
