To B'sNukemom&dad on trains to NYC. There are two options. The first and most direct is to take Amtrak from Albany to NYC Penn station which is down at 34St. The second option is to take Amtrak from Albany to Poughkeepsie and there switch to Metro North Railroad.. This takes you to Grand Central Station up near Times Square, 42ndSt. Depending on the times of your travel the fares will vary. Peak travel is during the rush hours and will be more expensive and the Metro North trains can get rather crowded. Off-peak will be cheaper and less crowded. Timing between Amtrak and Metro North could be tricky but schedules and fares are posted on their websites. Enjoy your stay here in NY and good luck to your son as he progresses through PT. Hope it warms up for your visit.
This was two years ago, my son went out of O'Hare. They have a great private USO area for the sailors and families to relaxin while waiting for flights.
Hello all.
My son has his PIR on March 14th then on the 15th off to MM Nuke school. What has been the normal departure airport after PIR?
Sarge thinks its O'Hare, but suggested I get some confirmation as we want to see him off at the airport.
Thanks
Craig
Thanks mlongst - I did just book our flights for (a long) Easter weekend and went into Albany. They weren't too bad - much cheaper than in June! Booked the hotel at the Roosevelt Inn in Saratoga Springs (a mom on N4M recommended it). Now just trying to figure out how/where to take the train into NYC! It's coming together ;-)
To B'sNukemon&dad and anyone else flying in to NY. Your best bet for airports is Albany. Rates are probably cheaper at Newark but it is 2.5 hours from newark to Albany without traffic. If you time it wrong going into Newark you could be in the morning or afternoon rush hours which is a NIGHTMARE. Also this is the east so there's the tolls to pay. The second best option is Stewart INt. airport in Newburgh, 90 miles south of Albany, right on I87, NO traffic whatsoever. Usually difficult to find a flight cheaper than Newark or Albany but sometimes you can find good deals. But you can step off your plane, get your bags and be on I87 in 10 mins. Hope this helps anyone. My son is in proto in SC so we still drive down when we can. 15.5 hrs. Tried to get him to come to BS( 2hrs.) but he likes the warm weather. Good luck.
Amanda starts nights tonight also. As far as staying somewhere, I don't know what's up there. I know in town is a Hilton. Took Amanda and her roommates to dinner there when we moved her up. Where were you looking flying into? It might be cheaper to fly into like Newark and renting a car. The down fall to that is you would still have a 3hr drive.
Brian - my son was off yesterday - starts on mids tonight. Guess he'll be finding out about the delay (again!). It will be nice when they actually get started (although I keep telling him to enjoy the "down" time).
Looked at flights in June - geez they are expensive! Any recommendations on where to stay? He has roommates so we can't stay with him and there's (probably) going to be 4 of us going.
B's......My daughter told me yesterday she just heard April. Maybe in June we will meet. it's only about a 3 hour ride for me
