Before they're in the fleet is your chance to still enjoy holidays or special events together! But maybe it's a taste of what lies ahead, I've had to adjust from a mom struggling to understand boot camp to having both sons deployed for long periods at the same time, you see and enjoy them while you can, never count on anything, because it always changes. I feel bad for your wife, I know she'll be heartbroken. If they haven't "classed up" for school yet, they have to stay there. It happened to my son a few years ago. I'd like to be able to tell you that it gets better. It doesn't. Rack up some frequent flier miles, see him when you can.

Comment by Scott Hyman on December 3, 2013 at 5:47pm: Believe me I know it's his job but he seems to be as unlucky as you can get. He was asigned watch right after PIR and now this. Just venting a little. I feel bad for my wife as she didn't get to PIR anticipating seeing him over Christmas now that is not happening.

Comment by Tom Lufkin on December 3, 2013 at 5:43pm: While serving aboard two SSBN's in the 70's our rotation put us on patrol for three Christmases in a row. I also missed my daughters first three birthday's her first words and her first steps. That is one thing most Americans do not appreciate about the US Military. They miss a lot of things the rest of us take for granted. God Bless everyone of them. They are the true heroes in the country.

Comment by Mike K on December 3, 2013 at 5:38pm: Unfortunately some sailors need to be on duty at all times which requires some to be not given leave over holiday times. Who gets duty and how it is worked out is anyone's guess, it is the Navy afterall. Our sailor has been in for just under five years so far and has had to pull duty over holidays before, it is just part of the job.

Eric - that's exciting for your daughter! Is she all ready to go?

Scott - sorry to hear that your son might not get Christmas leave. I may have read somewhere that they do have to keep a "minimum" of staff around. Not sure though - and don't know how they decide. Did he say for sure he doesn't get leave? Hopefully someone else will know more on here.

Comment by Eric Mount on December 3, 2013 at 12:01pm: Well..... My daughter was contacted by the nuke Chief this morning wanting to know if she wanted to ship to boot camp next week. Looks like she will be starting her Navy career very very soon! Works out really well as her friends step brother got to GC Friday!!!!!so excited!!!!

Comment by Bubblehead on December 2, 2013 at 8:48pm: Today, I had the distinct pleasure of pinning my old dolphins on my son on a pier-side ship's assembly. His boat (all boats these days) have the tradition of reading a "story" (usually a blub from submarine history) that the new submariner picks. My son picked a story he found on the web (and I had told him from personal experience) of the time that a couple of "lubricated" sailors from the USS Permit painted dolphins on the stern of the USS Chicago (a cruiser) during a visit to Japan.

A great ceremony.
