Awesome! I know how proud I was to get my dolphins and how proud I am to wear them today. Are you a member of the United States Submarine Veterans Association We have a very big base here in Goose Creek and we have lots of activities we do all month long. In fact I am going to Kings Bay for the WWII reunion with 400-500 of my best friends.
My son (submariner) just qualified throttleman and plans to finish his boat quals soon. I hope to be there when he gets his fish. (I'm an ex-bubblehead -- same rating as my son.) Color me proud.
"they are" not thier

I am a retired Navy Nuc living in Goose Creek. I attend many functions at the command. I know that the first three weeks they are in Indoctrination phase where their under lots of restrictions. He is not supposed to ride in a vehicle or go off base. You will probably be able to visit him but it will be a restricted activity. I am sure you have seen the threads on here about the problems some students have in following the rules and regulations required of the Nuclear Power School. The first three weeks are the most critical for them. That is where they learn the rules and regulations. I personally would not bring a laptop to him until he is done with Indoc. I did not say it is prohibited but I would want my son or daughter to concentrate on getting oriented and settled in during Indoc with no distractions. I hope this helps.
I need some logistical advice. My son is graduating bootcamp and will be heading down to Goose Creek this weekend. We are going up for PIR, but the next weekend, his first at NNPTC, is the Veteran's Day long weekend. We don't live that far from Charleston so, if he can get any kind of liberty, either we or his brother are planning to go down there. If that is the case, it wouldn't seem worthwhile hauling his laptop up to Chicago -- he can live without it a few more days.
Is that a feasible plan or is he likely to be sequestered?
Yeah, this really gets discouraging. My sailor went through the system and graduated prototype down in GC in January 2011. He was also 22 when he entered the Navy so his perspective was a bit different. He said that the nukes were some of the smartest people he ever knew academically but many unfortunately lacked self discipline, maturity and common sense. While he was at GC there were several masts for the exact same thing you are talking about. Most all instances were for stupid things which they were warned against time and time again. The Navy has to take these types of incidents seriously considering on what and where these sailors will be working. It is really a shame.
Well, my son really does dispense information on a need-to-know basis, and he can't really wrap his mind around how easily I am tempted into thinking the worst about everything. Just heard from him, he and his housemates are ok. Hope that things turn out for the good of those caught up in the drama.
Our Matt said there was a Mast last week for the same thing(s) for about 20, they were given lesser penalties, but the whole Command was given a stern warning.
Holy Cow! Seventeen!! Wow!!! Praying no bystanders were caught up in it, and now on pins and needles waiting to hear from him.
