Congrats Dennis, to you and your Sailor! Mine is in GC where they are struggling to keep the boats working so they can get sign-offs. Originally he should be graduating in 1-2 weeks but it may be May now. It is very frustrating for them so that is another aspect where we (cheerleaders) have to help them along. That reminds me I should text him.
I agree with Dennis, there were times in Prototype that my son wondered if he did the right thing and was thinking of dropping out. This is a guy who graduated PS with honors.
Congratulations Dennis to you and your son.
No, they go straight to their boats from prototype usually after a leave. They learn what they need once they report to their boats.
If a Nuke Sailor does go to submarine service, do they do the submarine school in CT in addition to their Nuclear schools and prototype training?
Thanks Isdemme2001. We will be mindful of all that. I know there are many serious challenges ahead for our son. But one step at a time. I think he'll be much more OK with any assignment he gets once he's gotten through A school, power school and prototype training. Really appreciate your insights.
Daniel Ce- Hopefully your son will get the assignment that he requested. But don't hold your breath. You guys, and I do mean you and your son, have a long road ahead of you...through A school, power school and prototype. It is a long and difficult journey and you will be needed as his chief cheerleader and morale booster. Getting through all of that with my son was the most difficult thing that I have ever done as far as effective parenting. Your son will need all of the encouragement and support that you can give him. There will be some very tough times ahead for both of you. You will be needed when he feels that it is too tough and he wants to quit, or when he feels that he just can't do it. I had many soul searching conversations with my son throughout the entire process. Even at prototype they wash some of the candidates out. My son had a room mate that was washed out two weeks before prototype graduation. Imagine that. How crushing after putting in more than two years of schooling and training, then being told you are not going to be a Nuke with only two weeks to completion! I really didn't know if or when I would get the call from my son telling me that he wasn't going to make it. As big of an influence that I think I was, his superiors are the ones who actually gave him the encouragement to keep going. I didn't know it at the time, but my son attempted to quit several times. His superior officers intervened and fortunately saw something in him and they simply wouldn't let him quit even though he badly wanted to! But the reward of seeing your son make it all the way through is well worth it and beyond description. Best of luck as you move forward through the Nuke pipeline.
Good News! Just got a text from my son in the Temp Holding Unit at GL that his waiver for sub duty was approved! Waiting for orders for A school in Charleston. I know that he may still end up on a carrier but it's such a relief to have him finaly moving forward.
My son just finished power school and was able to come home for 10 days. Then again, he's on hold for at least four months now before prototype.
Now that I think about it, he was home for a week after A school, too.
