Hi Thomas - congrats on the Kentucky for the sailor from Kentucky! Bangor is a nice assignment. Close to Bremerton and an hour+ from Seattle. Hope you get a chance to visit him when his crew rotates topside.
My son has a few more months at MT school before getting his formal duty assignment. Being in CA with a sister just north of Everett, WA we would like for him to get Bangor.
Homeports have not been consdered classified...if you look at our group Navy Ships you'll see homeports listed.....mind you this list needs updating, but is generally correct
Hi- My son is going through the final weeks of FT A school right now. As far as I can tell, his friends that started ST and ET school are about at the same point (getting boat assignments) so I think all the SECF ratings are probably pretty close to being the same in training length.
In terms of publicizing submarine home ports, you can actually find that out via official Navy websites so I don't think they keep that a secret. If you are in Groton, you can buy a laminated "Fact sheet" from the Nautilus gift shop that has homeports and other information on every ship or boat by class in the Navy. I think you should never discuss anything you might hear about actual operations of a boat that your son is on in a public forum. Pete
My son just found out today that he will be stationed in Bangor Washington and serving on the USS Kentucky SSBN737. On the Blue Crew. He is so excited, we are from Kentucky.
Should I say what boat and base on here? Not completely familiar with the rules. I don't want to do anything I shouldn't as far as posting details.
My son just called me. Got his boat assignment. He is so pumped! I am so happy for him.
That sounds great Darryl. My son graduated BESS a month ago and was very disappointed I could not get up there for the graduation. Cheri, since I haven't had the opportunity of going up there, I really don't have a feel for the sub culture and their selectness which makes me even more proud of my son. This is new for me.
We just returned from a trip to NSB New London for our son's BESS graduation ceremony on 7/15, I've read other peoples' comments on how nice the ceremony is and I agree; there were 60+ Sailors in his class, it was structured yet easy-going, the Speakers were great, and photos during the ceremony were encouraged. If you have the ability and the time, I'd highly recommend going, both for yourself and your Sailor.
For those with sailors in or headed to Kingsbay, GA for MT school. My album from a recent trip. Word of warning for those who do plan to go visit - OPSEC is a HUGE concern. Leave your camera, cell phone, etc. locked-up unless you are certain that the area you are in is approved for photography!
The base is quite impressive and the food in the galley is about as good as you can get in the military - meaning it was great. Well, I'm a two dessert-a-day person! Local community of KB is nice and you have to visit St Mary's and the submarine museum.
Slight difference of opinion on diving and ear clearing also from another long-time certified diver. It all depends on what kept you son from passing. If it was a temporary medical condition like a sinus problem, ear infection, or any one of a good dozen conditions that can easily be cleared with rest and proper medical treatment then I would say by all means - clear the issue and go for a retest.
But - and here I'm in total agreement with ctyankee - if the condition is a permanent problem, some anomaly with the inner ear, sinus cavities, or even a lung / trachea problem then it is time for a serious heart-to-heart talk. Not everyone is cut out for diving below 30 feet.
