KHK - my son does grad on 2/11 but he started back in December with indoc. No doubt they will meet up somewhere on the base.

My son's BESS class starts today. So, I guess they will eventually be together because he goes to ATT after that.

Mitch-I thought I heard at the graduation that the MTs and TMs were starting something this week but it could have been machinist mates. It was a little hectic and I am not an expert on the different ratings.  I think in the case of advance technical training (ATT) they may be waiting for the next class to clear so I think my son will be shovelling a lot of snow for a while (I think they get assigned jobs to fill up their days until classes form).  Pete

Pete, thanks for the great info on BESS graduation. I am trying to do a business trip to the charlotte then head up to Groton for my son's Feb 11th anticipate date. But nothing is coming together.

Congratulations. I've also been hearing there could be a lot of on-hold time between classes.

My son's BESS group is down to 80 after last week. The chiefs remind them there is no room for slackers and they'll graduate only 10 if they have to!

Pete, as far as them being on hold, they may be waiting for specific ratings to form a class. My son said that there were some MTs there that had been on hold for a while. They may be waiting to fill a void. When my son was at MEPs, a message had just been put out advising all MEPS that the Navy needed MTs. That is how he ended up choosing that rating. My guess is that the initial groups of MTs that they found in response to that request, like my son, are all just making it through the system. Maybe they are waiting for them all to form a class. Just a thought. Maybe you have some more insight.

Go Navy-If you are in the northeast and can I think the sailors and staff appreciate it. We were lucky that the big storm hit the day before we were going to travel so the roads were fairly clear.   We stayed at the Navy Lodge which is about 1/1/2 miles from the base and that place is great.  The one take away I got from the sailors is that they expect to be put "on hold" for at least a couple of weeks between training segments.  Enjoy PIR.  It is definitely "Big Navy"  Pete

Hi Everyone,  We have successfully returned from BESS graduation (tons of snow in central Ct).  We also "adopted" three now submariners for the day and I have a pretty good idea on what is going on.  First, BESS graduation was very nice and I think I liked it more than PIR.  It was about an hour long.  They had the Chief of the Boat of the USS Pittsburgh give a talk on his last cruise.  The graduates didn't march in so you could take pictures before and after.  They even said they would stop the ceremony for kodak moments. Each sailor came up and they read his name and where he was going next.  Most were goint to advanced mechanical or ATT but some were off to boats or the fleet.  They gave out about four or five awards as well for highest GPA, best leader etc.. I am thinking that this ceremony is more in line with the submarine community.   I think the chiefs were very appreciative of the families that came.  I think about ten family members were there and they make you sit right up front but you can move around to get pictures as much as you want.  All in all I am glad we made the trip.  To answer a couple of questions that came up or are in discussion.  MTs and TMs were starting there next classes almost right away but they actually were shifting to an afternoon-evening schedule.  ATT and ATT hold sailors were going to meet today to find out what there schedules are.  I wouldn't use a calendar to follow their training.  From talking to the new submariners, it seems like they expect a lot of "hold waiting for the class in front of them to finish" time so there stay in Groton may be fairly extended.  Also for SECF, the way they did rating selection was that the sailors filled out a "dream list" and the Navy came back and told them which rating they were going to get.  I met at least one sailor that was going to each of the ratings.  This BESS class did lose some sailors who started out with them.  Only 59 graduated but I think they moved the ones who had trouble downward to a different class.  Somewhat like boot camp.  Pete

Also leaving popcorn in the microwave and having the fire department roll to the building while you are in the shower. Ask your son if he heard that story. Some SA was masted for that and sent home.

Failing any test, twice. Failure to comply with orders, attitude.
