Ahhhh.... thanks for the info.  So whichis better to attend the BESS graduation or the A school Graduation?  i would like to attend either and to take his mother as a surprise.  Also what airport would I or should I look into fly into.

BESS = Basic Enlisted Submarine School.  This is where all the enlisted submariners go for basic knowledge needed for all ratings.  They will then move on to their "A" school, or specialty after that.  The graduations for these schools are short ceremonies with an address by an officer and walk across for certificates.  Low-key but a very proud moment nonetheless.  I'm glad I took the time to go!

Hi David and LukeH,

Thanks for the replies.  I apologize for not knowing this but what exactly is BESS ? As for what he is training for.... I know its something to do with fixing the Subs CPU's or weapons cpus .... something in that nature.  I really did not get into that topic much after his PIR graduation. We were just trying to spend as much time with him before he left.  Im just trying to get as much info as i can to prepare for any graduation he may have.  His mother missed his PIR so im trying to make sure I get her to his next one.

Hi Alex:  Luke is correct.  There is a BESS graduation.  While it is low-key, they encourage families to attend and your son will appreciate it.  We went to both BESS and Sub School ceremonies and my boy was really happy to see us.

There are a couple of motels within a mile of the gate.  We were able to stay at Navy Lodge.  You will need to pick-up your son before checking in so he can present his ID.

There is a lot to do in the area as Luke mentioned.  If you go to Mystic Seaport, find Mystic Pizza too.  Great pizza and some of the movie was filmed there.

Alex, my son is in BESS now. I know there is a BESS graduation, but it is a low key thing. Families are welcome, but it probably isn't worth an expensive trip. II have seen announcements for SECF graduations on Facebook, which would be A school, but I don't know about nonSECF rates. What is your son contracted for?  As far as visiting, it is probably better to think in terms of meeting at the gate or the museum and spending a day together off base. You mustn't miss the Submarine Museum. Mystic Seaport is also not far.

Hello All,

My son is currently in Sub school in Groton, Ct and then he will begin his A school there as well. He left Chicago on Saturday Nov 21st.  My question is will there be another graduation ceremony for both or either of these classes.  Also Are those sailors allowed visitors?  I again apologize for these questions.  Thank You in advance.
