Go Navy- John (sailor) just said that only two people either chose or got fire control and "everybody else" was sonar.  The everybody else is probably a generalization based on the people he knows.  He came over from BC with a bunch of guys in SCEF.  He did say specifically they gave them at least a talk on the different ratings and he thought FCT was most interesting so he applied for that.  He didn't mention nav or communications but I think communications is seperate from the SCEF group (ET, ST, FT).  Pete

BESS ends already? Seems like my son hardly got started especially with the Christmas stand down time. Guess I need to check in with him and see how the studies are going. I thought his class was going until mid-Feb.

My son is waiting on the next BESS to start. When they got there last week, they told them they would be on hold for a couple of weeks.

Which A schools are they waiting for?  THe BESS class that is finishing this friday I heard has a lot of SCEF that chose sonar and only two that chose fire control rating.  Pete

Son graduated from bootcamp right before Christmas. In Groton on hold now. Waiting on school to start.

KHK,

BESS lasts a while, is you son in the class that just started? Looks like that was scheduled to end in Feb. After that there could be three to four mini-classes that comprise his A-school for his rate.

Then it is off to either Bangor or Kings Bay for another six months of C-school. Unless they get rushed to the fleet for OJT, which is really hard for a NUB.

Depending upon how long the A-school takes and availability of slots for a C-school it could be 1 1/2 years + before a real cruise.

I'm pretty sure the rating has a lot to do with what he does next, but a cruise is probably not going to happen before passing his school(s) -- emphasis of the plural.

Comment on what happens after Bess- Good question. I am not exactly clear on this myself but I think it depends on his A school- If he is SCEF, I know they get assigned one of three schools (fire control, sonar or I think nav.) and they may or may not have to wait for a class to form up so they might go on hold.  I think there are also a couple of computer based courses they need to take that they might have to do on their own.  Pete
