Indoctrination, generally within the first few days of arrival. Oh there will be a lot of briefing time when your son arrives!

Definitely iPods and clock/stereo base for iPod/iPhone. My son had us ship those out the day after InDoc. No word on civies yet but we heard him ask for some serious technical fiber sweats for the weekend and around the barracks.

At least he doesn't want the car at A-School! I sure don't want to drive from So Cal to the North East. Hopefully he will wait until he gets his duty assignment.

My main concern is come the spring he'll be taking the motorcycle safety course and buy himself a set of really scary wheels!

At least the CO already read the new sailors the riot act on drinking! My son is excellent at following rules and orders.

Hi Guys,

My son went to Groton Nov. '09. As soon as he sent us his address, I sent a huge box (50#) UPS that included his laptop, PS3, winter coat and other clothes. We gave him his cell phone after PIR since he was one of the last Grad-n-Go's (he left 90min after the ceremony). I don't recommend the huge box, my son said it nearly killed him carrying up the hills of Groton. Your sailor will have to earn his card to be allowed off base. I think my son hit 'Best Buy' on his first trip off and bought a new upgraded computer. 'A' and Bess school sounded a lot like college with duty every couple of days. My son seems to really like Groton. When he completed school he requested to stay there and he lucked out and got his first choice (finishing 3rd/4th didn't hurt).

My son Dave is now out on his first deployment. He and other sailors were flown to meet their sub. We get e-mails about twice a week. We hope his boat returns before the New Year, we didn't have him for Christmas last year he was given leave the following week. I think the new sailors in Bess have to cover all the duty around the base, but they rotate who gets off which week. Hopefully you will get to see your sailor sometime soon.

hmmm,

Take on board sub? Not a lot!  Civilian clothing chit comes a few weeks after the start of BESS, but don't expect much from pre-boot to fit ;^)

Thanks KHK. Funny, son called just after I posted this and it sounds like it isn't Navy "provided" transportation rather a commercial service available.

Oh well, so much for my trying to help. Help confuse things.

Leonard, best wishes to your family and all those with sailors who are serving away from home over the holidays.

I can't comment on the Hartford airport transportation.  But, to all who will get to see their sailors during the Christmas holiday, count your blessings and cherish the time.  It will not always be so.  I have no idea when I'll get to see my son again.  He's under an ocean somewhere.

For parents planning to fly their sailor home over leave - Groton has a shuttle to the Providence airport. Do not fly in-and-out of Hartford unless you want to arrange your own shuttle service.

The Navy recommends Providence. Believe the airport code is PVD

Interesting observation from my son - Groton isn't flat like RTC! Not that he was complaining as our home sits at about 1,000 feet and all the trails around here are up and down. He did say he has to plan his trips to the NEX properly as its all uphill on the way back!

Son just got his phone we overnighted to his PO Box. Kid is in love with the base and school. Called to confirm travel plans over Christmas and told me about the awesome view out his barracks window. For OPSEC reasons I won't go into details. Sounds like he has some fine roommates and a great group of guys to go to school with.
